Rishikesh - 3dham - Auli trip
Guys,
I am a new member to this tribe, and posting a reply on the existing thread - as for some reason, the option to post "New Thread" is not coming up for me. I've a question regarding a trip i have planned for second week of Sept 08 taking my parents alongwith. Trip: Chennai - Haridwar by train on Sept 18 Reach Haridwar on 21st early morning - tour Rishikesh. 22nd early morning leave for Gangotri - reach late evening. 23rd - Tour Gangotri. 24th - Gangotri to Rudraprayag (stay overnight) 25th - Rudraprayag - Gaurikund - 14kms trek to Kedarnath (or "doli") 26th - Return to Gaurikund - travel to Ukimath 27th - Ukimath - via Chopta/Tungnath(Trek myself if possible) and reach Auli 27th night to 1st Oct - stay in Auli 1st Leave Auli - stay enroute for the night (place not decided - any suggestions?) 2nd - Reach Haridwar - stay 3rd - Catch 7:43 a.m train to Nizamuddin 3rd evening - Rajdhani to Bangalore. A long trip indeed. Let me know if the plan sounds good. I hate the new flight charges (sucks to take one in BAngalore), so having all the bookings in 2 tier AC. And one more question, is the train 2687 (Chennai - Dehradun Exp) and good SF train? Has anyone travelled before? Let me know. Thanks guys, Srini |

But I am a bit concerned about the day from Ukhimath - Chopta , then Tunganath trek, and come down and go to Auli (Joshimath). Is this possible?

Bhalo achi bhai Bhaswaran. Tomer khabor ki?
If you have a car it may be possible to trek to Chopta and subsequently reach Joshimath. But with public transport NO. |

Thanks Guys. Yes, i've booked the entire trip with GMVN from Bangalore, and taxi is that of GMVN (Ambassador). Any idea how the weather might be in Sept? And Chopta-Tungnath trek should be good i believe - is it world's highest temple?
Yup! luckily i was able to start a new thread On my way back (from Auli to Haridwar), GMVN suggested a stay in Harsil. Hopefully that's a good option? |

Harsil is a very very beautiful place. Don't miss it.
You will definitely need woolens for your trip. Tungnath can be very windy so carry a wind cheater. Why do you want to go to Auli? I also note that Badrinath is not in your list.... I wonder why. |

Thanks Jyoti. I'm member of CM - so staying in Auli for 3 days (to relax and cover up for the lost sleep!)
As for Badri, i'll be doing that from Auli - as a day's trip (its apparently 2 hours drive?) By the way - i want to know how's that train from Chennai to Haridwar - i don't want to start journey on a bad note, so hopefully this is a good train. |

Agree with Bhaswaran, 27th is too long to include a trek to Tungnath.

May I suggest a quick map perusal? OR maybe you shud ask GMVN to explain to you how this falls en-route Auli to Haridwar? FYI, Harsil is between Gangotri and Uttarkashi. In other words, don't bother with it on this trip, it doesn't fit in. Quote:
It's a train. Like any other. It is a very long route though, and prone to delays. You'll be better off in one of the daily Shatabdis or night-trains between Delhi and Haridwar and v.v. |

Sorry.. typo.. its Khirsu and not Harsil. Even if 2687 is delayed by an hour or two - doesn't matter i guess. 3:20 a.m (scheduled time) is toooooo early for me to wake up anyways. To book for BLR-DEL Rajdhani/any other express + Shatabdi onwards, there's lot of waiting involved for which i'll have to then look for some accomodation around Nizamuddin, etc.. which is a pain. Thus, settled for this option.
Anyways, sorry - now reframing the question - how's Khirsu? On my first day journey from RK to Gangotri (leaving early at 4 from RK) is there a possibility to check out some places enroute before reaching Gangotri in the evenng? |

Khirsu is nice, but not worth it for a short time, it will involve a diversion. If you want to spend a night, that's different. What it is is a small village, with a view.
The route from Rishikesh to Uttarkashi is basically lined with villages. Stop wherever you feel like! Between Uttarkashi and Gangotri, the hot spring at Gangnani may interest you. Harsil is a nice place for a lunch-break by the river, if you make it there in time. |
