Trek to Tungnath

Hi Everyone,
I am very new to this community. The amount of feedbacks that one receives lured me to join IndiaMike.
From next month onwards, I will be based at New Delhi for a part time academic program. I wish to travel Garhwal during my stay at Delhi(for 0ne yaer). The places around Ukhimath viz. Deoria tal, Chopta, Tunganath and Chandrashila has always been my dream destination. Can anyone suggest a tour plan in these areas which can be completed within 6 - 7 days?( Delhi to Delhi). What is the expected minimum cost for this tour. I also wish to spend a night at Deoria Tal. How can I do that.??
Sorry for asking too many questions, but tips will be of great help.
Thanks and regards,
Sagarneel.

Possible itinerary

Day 0 - take over night train from Old delhi to Haridwar
Day 1 - Haridwar to Ukhimath (8-10 hrs)
Day 2 Ukhimath - Sari - deorital (camp at Deoria tal)
Day 3 Deorital - Sari-Chopta - Tungnath
Day 4 Tungnath - Chandrashila (early morn) Chopta
Day 5 Chopta - Haridwar

I had done the section from Haridwar to Chopta in a taxi - so I am not sure if there are shared Sumos or direct buses running in that route. If there are no direct buses then it may be difficult to reach Ukhimath on day one - but I am sure other IM members will be able to comment.

The itinerary given by spicetrekker sounds good...although i envy ur stamina almoraboy...i had done chopta-tungnath-chandrashila-deoriyal tal in 1 day...

TRavelling with a couple of friends, we took two days-by car-from delhi to chopta ( we stayed overnight at srinagar)but u could do it in a day as well!
Day 2 was chopta and around...literally walking around our camp- it was all lush green and rolling meadows!

Day 3 was the short drive to sari village- the base for deoriya tal and the climb. The lake was beautiful. We spent the whole day there- had a great picnic as we were carrying our gear. There is a possibility of camping overnight- but please do check with the local authorities.

Day 4 was the climb up to Tungnath and after setting up camp- the climb to Chandrashila peak. Evening was chilled out with 'soya nuggets-karhi' prepared by a really old very sweet man- running a small dhaba!

Day 5 was back to chopta and a day to relax!

Well our trip went on for much longer than this as we traversed from garhwal himalayas to kumaon region...we explored the backroads not normally used by tourists and discovered some amazing views!

Hope this helps

Easiest is to change at Rudraprayag and, if need be, again at Kund.

Thanks again. I am planning to catch a night bus /train from Delhi to Rishikesh( arriving Rishikesh early in the morning). Will I get a direct bus/share jeep from Rishikesh , that will take me from Rishikesh to Ukhimath via Rudraprayag? Or is it wiser to get off at Hardwar? Are Hardwar-Rudraprayag and Rudraprayag-Ukhimath services frequent?
I am planning this tour in the second week of October. How will the weather be? Snow or clear?

All vehicles from Haridwar have to pass thru Rishikesh to go up the Ganga.
You may very well get something suitable at Haridwar immediately. Otherwise just take the first thing to Rksh.
BTW, I recommend a train, will be much better at night. The Nizamuddin A/c Spl. to HW (no trains to Rksh) is very convenient, short ride and very early arrival.

Early morning the chances are generally better for direct/long-distance transport. But I'll be surprised if there's anything to Ukhimath. I know for a fact there's a once-a-day going almost all the way (somewhere between Agastyamuni and Kund), but don't know the schedule. Anyway I can find out the details, just need a week or so - your trip's still way off.
In any case there's no problem to get to Rudraprayag. From there to Kund also plenty of vehicles ply, including a few to Ukhimath.

The weather in Oct will be clear, snow (on the peaks) if you're lucky.

October would be great - try and adjsut your sked so that you are at Tungnath around Full moon - Chaukhamba on a clear night with full moon is divine experience.

And the drive from Rudraprayag along the banks of the Mandakini river to Kund is truly wonderful. See if you can stop for a cup of tea at Syal Saur.

sit on the right hand side of the vehicle while travelling from Rsihikesh to Srinagar, left side from there to Rudraprayag and Kund!
