Himalaya under threat

Out of the world may be the right phrase. Yes, places like this do exist on this planet as of now. May be not in future. The global warming threat is looming large on the horizon. According to a recent report, glaciers in the upper Himalayan region and Tibet are melting fast and the weather patterns are changing. If this trend continues, we may not see such beautiful places as Darma valley. And for the coming generations, they will things of past which can only be seen in photographs. The elders in the valley say that the Panchachuli(east) glaciers are have receded considerably in the last 25 years.
Now the question is - What are we going to do about this? Should we be silent spectators to this largely human made tragedy? How each one one of us will bring about a change? Please think about it.

Darma valley in winter

Almoraboy,
If you want to see how the snow bound Darma valley looks like, see the photos in the album, I found on the net:

http://www.imagestation.com/album/pi...?id=2125186430

It's always better to go there in late winter ie April or early May, rather than at the time of onset. You will have a chance to get out, if you wait long enough.

Here is a painting of Niti, the last village in Dhauliganga(W), done 1812 by a British painter Hearsey, Hyder Young (1782-1840). When I visted Niti in 2005, to my utter surprise, I found the village not much changed since then- for almost 200 years. Click on:

On my visit, the cameras are prohibited in this "Inner line" region. But mountaneering teams that go via Niti to climb Kamet have clicked photos and kept them on the web.
