At Gangotri there's a check-post and not an office. Check-posts are always manned, therefore permit issue should not be a problem. Nevertheless you can call DFO Uttarkashi to cross-check.

Thank you so much Abhishek for the link - I desperately searched the link but didn't get anything online booking.

Just a check, I can see there is a mandatory column (dropdown list) where we need to select one of the operator who is registered with DFO office. Can't we define my personalised guide? Is it mandatory now to go with them only? I am bit confused now...please help.

Again a Big Thanks to Dilliwala for always encouraging in a positive way.

Regards, Samir

I'm having trouble believing that the permit will ONLY be available now through online application. Specially in the late season when the number of visitors is low. I would still check with DFO Uttarkashi nearer the travel date.

It doesn't say anywhere on the SWS website that online application is mandatory. I couldn't find any payment option either, although I didn't run through the whole process.
(Frankly, seems to me an effort by the local tour operators' lobby which has borne fruit )

P.S. What I found of interest is that 3-day permits for Tapovan and Nandanvan are possible again. They used to be officially available in the past, but the authorities had stopped issuing them some years ago. One had to take a 2-day permit for Gaumukh, do one's trek 'unofficially' and just pay for the extra days on return.

Thank you so much Dilliwala for taking extra efforts to find out the mystery.

I will also try to contact DFO office on 3rd May to understand the reality but not sure whether I will get co-operation over the phone.

I wonder, someone will visit soon and will write a great travelogue to help all Indiamike friends.

Regards,Samir

Any specific brand you can recommend ? For 5 days trek do you think I should go for 50 Ltr? Tks

Also I need to know a good quality Light-weight trekking shoe other than Woodland as I had two very bad experience with this brand.

Hi Team

Need suggestion about the cost of this 6 days Gomukh Tapovan package (Uttarkashi to Uttarkashi Rs.50,000 for Total 4 members)
They will carry our luggage, arrange permission, 2 double bed dom tent, Mattress, sleeping bag, carry all vegetables, ponir, mushroom along with groceries.

Do you feel rate is OK?
How long it'll take from Hrishikesh to Uttarkashi?
Any good Budget hotel at Gangotri and Hrishikesh?
What would be the tentative cost for Haridwar to Uttarkashi (to & fro)?

Finally, we are boarding the train on Nabami 29th Sep... Quite excited.. Thank you so much for all the support which I got from you.

1st oct: Reach uttarkashi and meet Guide - he will arrange a car to reach Gangotri. Accommodation will be arranged by him at Gangotri good hotel 2 double bed room
2nd oct: visit temple first and move to Chirbasa and camp here
3rd oct - Chirbasa to Bhojbasa.
4th oct: Bhojbasa to Tapovan. camp here
5th oct -Tapovan to bhojbasa
6th oct: Bhojwasa to Gangotri and he'll drop us at Uttarkashi (here accommodation cost in Uttarkashi will be paid by us)

7th oct - Uttarkashi to Haridwar (cost would be borne by us)

Regards, Samir
PS : If anyone is interested to join with us, please let me know.

Rates seems bit high, but you can do anything as most of the operators in Uttarkashi quoting inflated prices.
If you have that much of time attempt Kedartal, its also a beautiful destination.

Thanks Rahul for the Info (we don't have time to visit this time to Kedartal)

Will you be able to recommend any good guide which is actually important for me so that I can drop the package idea.

I am local in Uttarkasi, if you like I can put you in touch with a person or two who can give you a second opinion/another quote on this package... but I had some friends go up about 3 weeks back for a bit less, but that was without tents I believe. Who gave you this price? It seems reasonable enough to be honest.
