I visited chakrata once in December 2008 and found it more peaceful than Lansdowne and with Himalayan views which I did not get while I visited Lansdowne. Mussorie to Rishikesh via chamba should be 115 kms and Dhanolti has better stay options than chamba.

Lansdowne is definitely worth it, and I wouldn't compare it to Chakrata. But since you're wanting to mostly cover the western part of Garhwal, Lansdowne is out of the way. Plus the way you'd laid out the route was highly impractical (Pauri and Lansdowne are close to each other, going to Haridwar/Rishikesh in between means travelling in a Z - here's a map to help you with orientation), plus I don't believe in one-night stays if avoidable. So for all these reasons I suggested to cut down the number of places.

Dhanolti is another nice quiet place (in the off-season) to stay, but it's not mandatory, you can drive Mussoorie-Chamba-Rishikesh in a matter of 4 hours. In between you could stop at Dhanolti for a few hours. You can also see Dhanolti as a day-trip from Mussoorie, and then go Muss-Dehradun-Rishikesh the next day.

Agree on both points with DW.

You may also think of visiting places ahead of Chakrata instead of going to Lansdowne, like Hanol etc, nice drive throughout.

Delhi-Hardwar-Chakrata-Delhi

Hi Dilliwalla,

First of all, apologies for the longish post. I'm planning a quick trip to Hardwar and then somewhere in the vicinity of 2000+ m asl for two nights. Third night will be the drive back to Delhi to avoid Holi crowds en route.

We are four guys (between 35-38 years of age) on a Swift. No WAGs accompanying.

Here are some general queries followed by planned routes and options. Will really appreciate if some of you experts and experienced travellers can shed some light. Have never been to Chakrata but been on the Chamba-Kanatal-Dhanaulti-Mussorie circuit a few times - both ways.

1.Has anyone been on this circuit in recent times? What are the road conditions and what are the possible routes?
2.I'm still thinking whether to include both destinations for two nights or just head to Chakrata and chill. The dilemma being that we are just guys, and all of us long distance motorcyclists, so it makes sense to spend more time on the road then on a hammock. Sure, the hammock, birding and other activities and general "chill out" also are inviting prospects, but still in two minds.
3.The last evening/night (March 16, 2014) is reserved for the drive back to Delhi. Reason being that we don't want to travel and face intoxicated Holi revellers on the road anywhere. Would much rather prefer to reach Delhi early morning on Monday, March 17, 2014. All of us are experienced drivers and can share the driving if required but it's mostly just going to be just two of us swapping every now and then. No, no innuendoes or puns intended!
4.What is the gate system for Chakrata? I heard that the armed forces make the road to Chakrata one-way a few times during the day. Anyone has any ideas about this and the approximate hours.

March 14, 2014 (Day 1):

•Delhi to Hardwar (2 hours stopover at Hardwar)
•Option 1a): Hardwar to Dhanaulti via Chamba
•Option 1b): Hardwar to Chakrata (Best suggested route details requested and approximate time taken)

March 15, 2014 (Day 2):

•Option 2a): Dhanaulti (hike to Surkhanda Devi temple) breakfast at Dhanaulti and hit the road to Chakrata (Approximate travel time and best suggested route details requested)
•Option 2b) In and around Chakrata, general lazing around, go for a hike to a village nearby etc.

March 16, 2014 (Day 3):

•Leave Chakrata after lunch, maybe early afternoon, reach Delhi late night (to avoid Holi crowds enroute).

Thank you in anticipation of some suggestions and route/general advice.

I already gave a two-line reply in the Road/Traffic Conditions thread.

With all due respect to everyone's driving experience, I really feel it's too much driving in that much time, specially if you're going via Haridwar. Just go to Chakrata, specially since you've never been and there's plenty around there that can be explored in a few days (you'll have to read all of this thread for the various destinations ).

Driving conditions should be unremarkable for the most part, except between Muzaffarnagar and Roorkee (the road-building work is a pain) and in the Chakrata region, (roads quite narrow and unlikely to be in top condition).
I suggest Haridwar-Dehradun-Mussoorie-Yamuna Pul-Chakrata route. You can do the last section via Lakhamandal if you like - little longer but a great drive. Tiger Fall is on the way here, you can get that ticked off already on the way in if you have the time (requires a 1.5 km walk from the parking spot to the fall).
If you don't have one already, I suggest to get the Nest & Wings map of Uttarakhand, Rs. 70 only and available at major bookshops. It'll clear your fundas as far as the exact route goes.

The one-way system between Kalsi and Chakrata was scrapped 6 years ago.

Thanks for the reply Dilliwalla. I already have the Uttarakhand tourist map. Been using that for 10+ years now :-)

I suppose we'll take a call once the date nears, whether to just go to Chakrata, or include Dhanaulti as well.

There is only one hotel in Chakrata i.e. Hotel Snow View all remaining are outside Chakrata... check out its website for details...

HI
Hotel snowview is better option to stay in Chakrata. it will come under your budget and you can make it a base for your travel around chakrata. and there is no hotel in Kanasar (only FRH is there) .
