Need a route for trip to Kumaun and Auli
Hello Everybody,
I'm new to this forum and already find it impressive. We some frnds are planned to travel Kumaun Region[Nainital,Kaushani,Binsar,Munsi ary] and Garhwal[Auli] region during this winter[i.e. From november 30th]. Will you please inform me what will be the best route to cover all the places and will we get snow that time? Thanks in advance... Regards--Arindam |

You dont detail your mode of transportation.
But starting at Kathgodam, you can do Nainital, Kausani, Munsiyari, Binsar, Almora, Kathgodam For Auli, you have to make it to Joshimath from Rishikesh. This is a different route. Of course, you can make it to Auli from Munisiyari (less frequented route, weather conditions will become more imp here) and then return via Rishikesh. (in that case go to Binsar after Kausani, though it will be a bit of a roundabout. After Binsar you can go to Munisiyari via Bagheshwar.) Unless you have a lot of time, I would suggest leave out Auli this time.

Thanks capt_mahajan for ur reply...
We have decided to hire a car for the whole trip. The car will pick us from Kathgodam. and oviously we don't want to avail the same way to return. That's why we're of thinking of return via Dehradun. If it's time taking may be we can then simply avoid munsiary and go to Auli via gwaldam from Kaushani. Will we get snow at that time i.e. at late november? Thnks in advance Regards--Arindam |

It may not snow in end November in Munsiary, but as Captain has said it is very difficult to predict, weather has changed drastically over the last 2 years. It snowed in Shimla this March !!!
Why do you want to go to Auli? Any particular reason? |

Hi, Since you are hiring vehicle you go to Munsiyari and then start moving towards Gwaldam from where Karanprayag is 60 km. From there you can move up to Auli. As for snow is concerned it is unlikely. If snow is the main issue go during Feb.

Hi Arindam,
a. Kumaun Region[Nainital,Kaushani,Binsar,Munsi ary] and b. Garhwal[Auli] The above are 2 different routes. 2 important points between the 2 are Kathgodam & Dehradun/Rishikesh. There is a train between Kathgodam & Dehradun and vice versa. covering the entire distance by a single car is too long and most important Kathgodam to Dehradun/Rishikesh is not less than 400 km apart auli being another 250 to 300 km further. have travelled extensively in both areas best best would be. 1. cover -Nainital,Kaushani,Binsar,Munsi ary- by reaching kathdogam by train & hiring a car from there or nanital. 2. cover kathgodam - dehradun by train or vice versa. 3. from dehradun/Haridwar/Rishikesh hire a car and by making a night stopover at any of the prayags while going & comming to auli will be better. Weather in nov should be very good. cheers Amit |
