No ordinary tourist will attempt it believe me - only the die hard trekkers and the faithful.

That's what I was pointing out. I hate the idea of Bedini full of "normal tourist" to view Trishul & Nandaghunti scaling up the height via a ropeway/helicopter.

here are the series of videos ->
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcP3n...eature=related

the smaller yatra also takes place every year. in the smaller one, the prayers are done at bedni kund and then everyone returns. on the day of nandashtami, there is a local holiday in uttarakhand. the skools are closed and usually melas take place (for ex: in the flats of nainital. as kids we always looked forward to the yummy stuff to be had in the flats). there are a lot of prayers at nanda devi temples all over uttarakhand.

the bigger yatra takes place once in 12 years as jitu pointed out. the last one was in 2000 and the next one is in 2012 :-)
i am not sure if they will be able to make helipad in bedni. they tried for a ropeway but locals blocked it. patwal ji of lohajung (of the patwal lodge) is working hard to preserve the forests in bedni.

Oh I think I got a whiff of this last year. End-Aug in Almora I was told there's a Nanda Devi mela going on. 1st Sep in Nainital I was told something was going on at the flats, but I understood it to be linked to the Naina Devi temple.

not many ppl know, but the nanda devi festival is celebrated in the eastern side of nanda devi also. if you listen carefully to the background song by negi ji in the video link provided above, it chants 'johar ke martoli kee nanda raaj raajeshwaree'
i had gone there is 2005, during the term break in my college days. wow ... enjoying the festival after almost 15 years :-)))
johari ppl from all across had come back to the valley on that day. there were celebrations in martoli, burfu, milam. we were going towards milam and from the opposite side of the river, in village paachu, i could see a procession travelling from the village to near the base camp of the peak ... where they do the prayers. now that is real celebration ... right at the feet of the goddess.

i have some pics here, but the quality is very basic (poor students can only afford the very basic ones). there was a big celebration in milam village that night (including cutting the sheep). the itbp people also came over for the prayers at the temple. the johar way of celebrating is a bit different from the rest of kumaon. there some people even put the skulls of sheep on their heads and danced (more of tantric / tibetan influence).
the menu was puris, rice and mutton. for drunkards, there was also chhang / chakti. a drunk glacier hydrologist tried to be too friendly at the ceremony. on finding out that i had come from kerala (studying there at that time), he thought i spoke wonderful hindi by mallu standards .. and then to surprise him more, i said i could even speak some pahari ... lolz lolz lolz ... he was totally drunk.

later on, i had got some brahmakamals as a gift from the villagers in martoli.

here is the complete set of pics ->
http://almoraboy.blogspot.com/2007/0...home-page.html
1 set for each day. the trek to nanda devi east base camp is 80% similar to the milam trek. right at the end (near martoli/pacchu) you turn left. wow, looking back, this was an amazing journey .... now i guess am feeling nostalgic about it (as i pahadi one says 'narai lagna') ... this thread is tempting me to go back and try it during this year's nandashtami...(the eastern side).

LIH, why wait for next lifetime? pratibha naithani also did it last time, being the first woman to go all the way upto roopkund in the yatra.

AB my problem is I suffer at high elevations - asthma and all the body gives up even if the spirit is willing. Maybe I will start taking blood originators and hire a mule for my yatra - is that allowed?

The Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra has been postponed by a year, and it will now start on 29th August 2013. This is due to the reason of Malmass or extra month in the year, which is not considered auspicious.

Hi travellers and possible participants in Nanda Devi Raj Jat,

I just returned after a trip to Nauti, a very nice quiet place and a temple.

I gather that as the date in 2012 falls in sept and predicted to be a cold weather they have postponed the programme to 2013. It will start on 29th August 2013. So folks you have one more year to plan and prepare.

Dont quote me as I only gathered from locals and couldnt meet the Pujari there.
