Mayur is not able to match the charm of Fairy Dale for me. Once you have stayed at Fairy dale then Mayur feels like a Pigeon hole.

And can you describe how to get there from the bazar? Anywhere near GMVN or Fairydale?

The photos on the website are misleading. Certainly the restaurant was a lot less salubrious than the photo suggests (unless that's 'at home').
DW his home was an old converted movie hall, and by the pics posted, it seems that he has converted the whole building into a hotel and another restaurant, wonder where they live now, with the building restrictions in Lansdowne, it is amazing that he could convert the whole Movie Hall into a hotel in three years!. Wow!
When we saw it it was a massive hall that was being used as a storage for old broken down things, but the rooms he had built to let out were very nice (by hill standards ).
I know of Fairydale too and liked its old world colonial ambience, reminded me of the house I grew up in. Nostalgia!!
This old cinema hall is closer to the market and than Fairydale. I remember the Tipseey restaurant too we had a great laugh at the name when we first saw it

Aah, clear as mud! Yes, the hotel website mentioned the family owning the movie hall.

Knowing a bit about cantonment laws -
1) So long as he didn't add to the existing structure of the hall, he'd be ok.
2) In the strictest reading of the law, he wud have needed a go-ahead from the Cantt. Board to renovate, but that's mostly a formality. And then there's always bribery, innit?
3) BUT (there always is ) - altho the premises themselves wud have had a commercial licence in the past, so EVEN there he'd be in the clear, big Q is whether the licence lapsed at any time after the hall went into disuse. And even if it didn't, whether the Cantt Board wud have allowed change of purpose (they can if they want). Or if the licence lapsed, whether they granted a new one.
Different Boards react differently, e.g. in Muss the Board doesn't grant new licences, period. But Lansdowne CB cud if they wanted to. And again, there's always bribery, innit?

I think they were already preparing for the necessary permits etc when we were there and did talk about starting work soon. They didn't want to change the structure of the hall (Cantonment Board hassles I guess) but wanted to construct something within the existing building. I think they had already applied for a renovation permit way back then ... and renovation as we know can stretch to accommodate a lot. Anyway It does look a lot better than i remembered it, I think I will plan another trip to Lansdowne soon if only to see Mayur hotel and for nostalgia of course

Exclamation Query

HI

Anyone's done Delhi-Meerut-Lansdowne, leaving Delhi post lunch by car. If so, would appreciate views on traffic conditions, particularly in Meerut. Thank you.

Meerut innards will be chaotic. But there is no need. Just before approaching Meerut City there is a route on right hand side, which goes alongwith a minor canal. It takes you to Mangal Pandey Nagar in Meerut, from where Mawana road is very close.

This way you can skip the Non Sense traffic of Meerut.....
