Massive floods in Uttarkashi district, many feared dead
Massive floods in Uttarkashi district, many feared dead
There had been reports of cloudburst in uttarakshi, resulting in massive floods in asi ganga river last night .
This river passes thorough sangamchatti and Gangori and merges with Bhagirathi 4Kms before reaching uttarkashi.
Many houses have been swept away and Bridges collapsed .
Recieved updates from my family residing there.
They say nothing of this amount of destruction by floods have been witnessed earlier.
Indiatv website reports as many 40 people being swept away in floods.
My sister told me many families have been indeed swept away.
People have lost their family members as they narrated their misfortune.
She witnessed a building collapsing and falling into river early in morning.
My own house is falls in affected area , fortunately for us its located at higher ground but many who had their houses near roads and river banks may not be so lucky.
Roads on river banks have also collapsed and the entire region has been has been cut off from main town of uttarkashi.

The road till uttarkashi from rishikesh was unaffected by the floods. Its the road from uttarkashi to Gangotri that affected.
The damage is limited to small strecth of 4-5 Kms starting from uttarkashi but due to bridges and roads destroyed , the access to Maneri Bhatwari and Gangotri is severely hampered.
The picture in following article says the sad story

2nd time in a month. I hope the district admin responds with more speed than last time.
ajay - what was the condition of the Gangori-Sangamchatti road till last week? I mean, were the sections which were washed away last month restored, was the road open again till Sangamchatti? I suppose all access is blocked again now.
P.S. Suggest to add the word 'district' to Uttarkashi in the title. At first glance one tends to think it means Uttarkashi town.

The most affected area is around Gangori region. The valley surrounding sangamchatti should be also worst affected as the asi ganga which flooded, runs through this valley.
The bridge that connects the Sangamchatti region to uttarkashi at Gangori has collapsed.
The water crossed over the market around the bridge taking away houses with it
My Bro in law told that people who gathered at night on the bridge were also swept away as water level rose above the bridge.
All bridges connecting the two banks of the bhagirathi and asi ganga from uttarkashi to gangori have collapsed or beginning to collapse.
I have changed the thread title, but main town is also affected since three Bridges connecting two banks of bhagirathi in main town are in danger of getting collapsed.
the photo in link I posted shows one of the bridge located in heart of town.
