Hi all,
We have a bit over 2 weeks in Uttaranchal in November and were wondering if it would be possible to do a sort of circuit. The southern part would be Rishikesh, Corbett, Nainital, then Almora and Kausani. It is the northern bit that I would like some help with, if anyone has been there. That would be, according to LP's map Kausani Karnaprayag Rudaprayag Pauri Rishkesh ( there is also another Srinagar there somewhere! ) Does anyone know if this route is feasible, and if there is anywhere worth staying on the way? Cheers Kipling I have also posted this to Thorn Tree. Last edited by kipling : Sep 14th, 2003 at 13:32. |

Hi kipling!
We did this circuit a few years ago starting from Nainital. We took a state tour bus to Kausani which included an overnight stay there in a state owned rest house. I can't remember why we did this but it was either more convenient, more comfortable or cheaper than travelling by normal bus. Anyway it was an enjoyable experience travelling with a busload of Indian tourists in holiday mood. The bus returned to Nainital the following day but we headed on to Gwaldam by jeep having missed one of the infrequent buses on this route. Unfortunately we missed out Baijnath where there are some old temples. We then travelled by local buses to Karnaprayag, Rudraprayag, Srinagar, Tehri and Chamba to Mussoorie. We spent a couple of nights in each place usually staying in Government run tourist rest houses and doing day walks along the river valleys. The rest house at Rudraprayag was particularly impressive with a view over the sangam but completely empty as it wasn't the pilgrimage season. They provided chai but nothing else so we had to eat in a small restaurant in town. If you plan to go through Pauri then it might be worth continuing to Lansdowne. It's a hill station we've thought of going to a couple of times but never made it. In a week of travelling we didn't meet any other foreigners so this area could be described as a bit off the beaten track. If you would like more details feel free to PM me. Here's a pic of the view from the Government Tourist hotel at Rudraprayag. |

Hi.
Was in the area this time last year for two weeks. Really loved it, people very friendly and kind. All I can tell you is what we did: went from Delhi to Hardiwar, then Rishikesh and up to Joshimath, near the border. Joshimath = brilliant place right up there, did see any other tourists/proper job. Did a 5 day trek on the Curzon trial, again only tourists doing it. Then went to Kausani, views great but not much else is there (overrated??) and on past Almora to the Papa Sala ridge: V.V.V good place to chill out and put the feet up, stayed at Kim's place, very nice man. Have a great time. |

Warrenq, thanks for your input. It sounds like a very interesting area, and the fact that a lot of the places are not mentioned in LP etc, also appeals.

There is a direct bus to Manali from Haridwar. Haridwar is just one hour distance from Rishikesh.
Or do you need driving directions ?
