Is This Right Time To Visit Badrinath and Kedarnath

Hi,

I am going on week long tour to Badrinath and Kedarnath. Can you guys tell me if the roads are clear to go? I’ll catch bus from Rishikesh. I’m scared about weather condition because this is my 1st tour in Uttarakhand region . Any quick reply would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Manish

Hi linkguru,
The temples opens in May first week and it will be a fish market.
The monsoon starts during second week of june and it may last upto september second week. According to me the best time will be during the first week of october where the crowd is less. I had visited char dham in 2005 in the month of october and it will be a bit cold.
wish you all the best,
n kumar

Go either in the very first days, or end of June. Of course, October is best.

hey manish...
so sep oct is the best time to go but may is gud too as in may its not so crowded already.. temples open on 9th may this year..
n i suggest may as its gud time to escape chandigarh summers.. ;-)
only the direct buses to joshimath or badrinath 're advisable.. or look for sumo/ jeep taxis goin that way... n since itsd a long ride.. avoid back seats ;-)
i belong here.. n stay here... n assure u thre's no reason to b scared..
u'll love the place... trek in the area if u can.. (might need permission)
u know..its a kinda busy lil town.. but walks around r beautiful..
cheers

ok if u plan your visit before the 15th may...
hoardes and bus-loads of tourists will then descend on this, the holiest of the dhams - badrinath...

in the first week of october, a couple of years back, i once was the single occupant of the 500-bed gmvn tourist rest home at badrinath...!

and kedarnath is much higher than badrinath - involves a 16 km trek; unlike badrinath, which you can reach even by bus... the road till rudraprayag is common for both - the nh-58... along the alaknanda... you carry on along the alaknanda to reach badrinath... and for kedarnath, you turn from rudraprayag, along the mandakini...

but, you can't do hemkunt sahib and the valley of flowers that early - they are still covered with lotsa snow - especially hemkunt, which opens much later and closes earlier than badrinath...

for more on the Valley of Flowers and Hemkunt Sahib - Check out this thread...

Valley of Flowers & Hemkund Sahib

cheers...!

The monsoon starts the second week of june?!? I am about to head to the hills of UT for the first time and was expecting it to start around mid-July. Are Almora, Kasauni, and other parts of Kumaon likely to be safe in June?
No matter what road I travel, I'm going home.

The normal date for the onset of South-West monsoon in Uttarakhand is July 1st according to the Indian Meteorological Department.

Middle of June in Uttaranchal will be dry...
And depending on the time of the day and the altitude of the place u happen to be in, also hot...!

Relax - No chance of Monsoons as such that early...
A mild shower would always be welcome as a respite at that time though...!

Cheers...!
