What about the posters in Varanasi ? Given the fact that many long term tourists from the west come and stay there, may be someone would have some information about Jonathan.[/QUOTE]

i have sent the poster to some guesthouses and hopefully they will put them along the ghats

the german bakeries might also be places with a strong chance of refreshing somebodies memory. especially after the big yoga meeting in rishikesh last month , good thinking bro

*That should be Padha, I guess. Called. No Jonathan. they have no email.

Sharma guest house 'phone is presently out of order', recording says

Kasol inn travels..Called. Unhelpful.

Narayan Guest House... mobile phone number does not work, I think is one digit short.
landline number not working either.

Have emailed Narayan GH and Krish Tour and Travels from the link- no more email ids there. Enquiry about J and request to print and display poster.

So much for the age of communication eh?

This GH in Kasol would probably be more helpful;

I've been stupidly away from my Lonely Planet for a bit.

Next time I have it around, as well as some other notes and guesthouse cards of mine, I'll contact the very few guesthouses I stayed in or talked to in Kumaon two years ago (Ramnagar, Nainital, Ranikhet, Almora), or ask you to do so where I can't email them.

(To those not in the know, please note again Rishikesh is in the western region of Uttarakhand known as Garhwal. Its eastern region is known as Kumaon. Uttarakhand itself was known as Uttaranchal before for not a very long time in very recent history, and before that, it was just a northern part of Uttar Pradesh. It was still so when I first visited India in the early 1990's.)

Someone could of course dig through the entire Uttarakhand section of LP and contact them all. (And then the other travel biggie titles. What have we, Fodor's, Footprint, Rough Guide, Frommer's, etc. The Indian-produced guidebook titles by Outlook Traveller, and by Eicher, if the latter cover this region, I'm not sure. The former certainly cover most of the country, and in several subject-specific titles, regional or to do with trekking or wildlife or honeymooning and stuff, etc. A downside may always be notably OT's titles may be quite outdated; one should look at their publishing dates, and then it's never clear to me if there's been a reprint, does this mean all the practical data have been updated.) The (non-Indian) Eyewitness Travel Guides, may be known under different names in international translation btw. The latter caters generally to a more non-budgeteering public, as may some of the others mentioned. Bit of a massive job, and of questionable use. But it could be done.

I had mentioned the Bansal Cafe (and guesthouse) in Almora before, could someone contact them? Very friendly Kumaoni owner, speaks good English, knowledgeable about the region and the traveler scene there also up at Kasar Devi, and it's a popular backpacker place to stay, indeed listed in LP, its cafe also popular with locals and Indian tourists btw. I don't have the contact details here. It's on or just off Lalal Bazaar, the central pedestrian mall there.

A poster up here wouldn't at all go amiss, and he might want to spread them around some, also to Kasar Devi, indeed. I had likewise mentioned before his staff and people advertizing courses there and stuff, as I guess with many places up in the region, tend to move to places like Goa and such to work in the winter low season, so they should have a good network.

Mach, I think most hotels that LP lists in their guides are also on their website - here are the search results for Uttarakhand: http://hotels.lonelyplanet.com/india...ta=&VAMessage=

(Edit) - ah, they don't seem to list any phone numbers unfortunately.

Good stuff!
Here's a list of hotels in Almora;

You could try calling eccentric old mr Shah at Kailash Hotel which is a budget place popular with westerners,not sure what reaction you'll get, he's unpredictable!KK

That is not a bad suggestion. Actually it is indeed not so obvious, but there are several tabs there with their hotel listings (at least last time I looked); switching around these, you can often find contact details, even if the place otherwise doesn't receive (much of) a review. One needs to carefully study what all tabs are there.

I'd get to calling such places myself, but a) can't afford to, and b) when I recently called to India again regarding another question here, I was once again reminded just how difficult that can be, and to a foreigner not speaking any of the relevant languages. Of course making it that much more of a costly affair. Hellooo, saar? Yes, no?

(Please do note calling to India at least over a landline and from the Netherlands isn't as such very expensive, it is in fact quite affordable. Anyone who feels called to it, check your rates, and just go right ahead. Be sure to let us know your results.)

ps EDIT And checking now, while they list Bansal Cafe though, it doesn't look like they list contact details for it. Could anyone just look it up in their LP? I don't know if it's in the latest edition, but I know it was in the edition before it, or the one before that. It should be in the Almora hotels section of your book, it is a guesthouse. (So I guess for web searches, look also for +bansal +almora and +hotel or +guesthouse or +lodge or + lodging or something.)

Thinking of Outlook btw, that is indeed a popular Indian publisher of a variety of magazines. http://travel.outlookindia.com/. I thought they were related to some high-end media or publishing group, but have trouble finding any details on that now.

Outlook Traveller, besides a guidebook series, is a monthly (I think? Fortnightly?) magazine of theirs. I was just thinking if you could get an alert message out in there, that would again not go amiss.
