Exactly how many times had Jonathan been to India? By my count, at least four times if he interviewed this Yogi who died in 2008. Is there a copy/link to this particular interview? If so, it may well hold a valuable clue ......

This Maharishi interview was mentioned somewhere earlier on this thread, or in one of the newspaper articles linked to (I think it's where Peak got that above quote from), I found it odd and couldn't find any direct verification of it, either. But didn't really look for it, either.

My feeling was it could have been a mix-up with this Gujarati man he met, also reposted again in some previous posts. But then obviously I haven't looked into whom all else he may have met or interviewed.

It wouldn't of course be so odd given the Maharishi's Rishikesh backgrounds, and if that interview was some years ago, but then how would Jonathan "last" have interviewed him... it can't have been one of his last interviews, and I doubt if he'd have been the last to interview him.

Blame it on a journalistic glitch or some other mistake, maybe. Or maybe some other fellow calling himself Maharishi? (Meaning "great sage" or so, is that correct?)

It was in the 'Pioneer' - the only newspaper article to date on his disappearance. I was under the impression that David had given this information to the press? I don't see how they could have otherwise have sourced it. Or perhaps they did change the Guru 'on purpose' - if only to add more credibility to his situation.

The Indian press 'can' move in mysterious ways at times.

Can you point me to where/post number Peak?

Since Jonathon's belongings were found near the waterfall, this thread seems to have slowed down search wise.

Due to a number of things mentioned earlier such as "Don't worry it's a kind of spiritual journey" I still think there's a strong posibility he's gone walkabout & we should continue to look at other area's/possibilities.

There's been mention of Chopta & i think it may be an idea to contact Mr Negi who helps travellers arrange camping between Tunganath & Chopta Mr. Raghuveer Negi's mobile number is 9690090515 maybe Capt Mahajan could kindly call him???

Another place i think worth contacting & asking them to put up a poster since they get many western visitors is this ashram; http://path2yoga.blogspot.co.uk/2011...ga-ashram.html

I think it's somewhere which would attract Jonathon.KK

Thanks Peak.
While we are on the subject of Maharishi, I wonder if David visited or did a search of the now deserted Maharishi's/Beatles ashram in Rishikesh?????it would be a ideal place to hide out if you didn't want to be found, i think the whole site is on about 50acres & there are lots of derelict/deserted buildings you could take shelter in without anyone knowing you were there.KK

It might also help if you can clarify where you meant by "Nyenath" & that you got the name right,it doesn't mean anything to IMers familiar with the area???

You say the lady who spoke with Jonathon about Shantaram in Rishi says it was around 12-14th feb, which is around the same time??KK

Hi David, when you get chance it would be useful if you could answer/clear up the above questions/confusion???KK

Um, I'm sorry for putting it as bluntly, and I've been looking at this up and down and whichever way I could at it:

But campsite found, all his stuff there but not his wallet (as per the latest update at post #526 above). I'd say good chance he got robbed, and given lengthy time of no communications, that may not have ended well.

I've been thinking how to gently put this for days, but I can't really make it any better. You of course need to and will keep on searching, you'll want to find at least some evidence. And I hope I'm wrong, and I may well be. More than conjecture none of us have, anyway.

It's why I asked so what do the police or other authorities involved think of it, they should have a view on it.

There were guards of some sort there 6 months ago and back in 2005. Although we went in they were not happy to let us stay for long. Would be possible to sneak in and shelter I guess.

Not possible.Uttarakhand government has taken over the ashram and all its land. There is a guard charging a small fee(unofficial) for allowing the visitors in. I believe he checks the premises in the evening to ensure there is no one inside before locking the main gate but it is possible to enter the place from other side via hills anytime. The place is completely abandoned and I heard weird stories from the guard and locals about what happens there after sunset. I've spent a couple of hours in the ashram and its hard to imagine someone could think of staying there.

Yes but there are other possibilities of course.
The only thing you might need for a 'spiritual journey' is some cash, especially if you met some charismatic people who will teach you something. Everyone needs to eat. Am I being foolishly optimistic?

Called him approximately six hours ago, around 0930IST today. He doesn't know anything that could help, and hasn't seen Jonathan. He said he was mainly doing stuff to Ukhimath these days.

Being a hillman myself, I might be a little subjective here but in hills in India you don't even need cash if people know that you don't have any money to sustain yourself.

No. I don't think so. His behavior leading up to his disappearance & from what little we know - appeared to be confused & quite out of character - especially for a young professional journalist who was used to the importance of deadlines & communication.

He may have walked away from his belongings or his belongings may have been found & filtered by someone at some point afterwards ... but I don't think that foul play of any kind was a factor in his exit.

My concerns/focus would be more towards the available & local antidotes for 'freeing the mind'. I would be searching hard - upstream & downstream.

I don't think this has been done yet (Hindi translation of the latest version of the poster.)

Could a kind IndiaMike member please do it?

(And does Hindi suffice for this region? I guess it would.)
