If it had been stolen I'd think the money would be missing.

This makes me think that it was just lost and he couldn't find it again.
First, I've not read all this thread, just keep looking at the last few posts every few days, so apologies if what I say has already been discussed or dismissed.

What was his state of mind, has he ever had any form of depression?

The backpack being partially hidden, yet containing everything got me thinking.

I did some really stupid stuff when I traveled one time, I didn't realise till a good while later that I was severely depressed when I had traveled, and when my mind wasn't where it should have been I could easily have left all my stuff in a place that I considered safe and just wandered off, and the way my mind was at the time, I'd just keep wandering.

It's unlikely this is what Jonathan has done, more likely he intended to go for a swim or a climb, could something have distracted him before or after a swim/climb.

Lynda, my love, for now.

I've been having some banal stuff going on; was so happy to hear from you though, as indeed had been thinking Oh boy, a few days no news... Hope they haven't had some bad news. It seems that you haven't.

Well. Blah. You have so many members giving it their best; not many on the ground on this thread though, I think.

I've been thinking with previous cases, too, why don't I go out there and help. Well, wouldn't be so practically arranged, and what would I know beyond the locals. Really nothing. Again, I don't even know that area. (And I am far away in the Netherlands, in case it needs to be stressed again.) --> I appreciate the feeling of togetherness this thread may lead to, but of course it doesn't mean respondents are anywhere physically cose to do anything.

The Capt. with his phone calls came close to that, others could of course do that. It's not very expensive, either.

I wish you the best of luck again. I'll be in with some thoughts later.

I felt relieved to read something from Lynda today.

Just some random thoughts.

To go for swimming would be a very logical reason to hide your backpack including all your valuables somewhere. But what was the reason why he didn't come back? Bathing in a mountain stream in late winter/early spring is only for really tough people, for sure.

Going on a difficult trek without your passport and documents that would fit in a tiny bag? Not very likely.

Someone has stolen Jonathan's stuff, hides it somewhere to come back later to pick it up, maybe in the night? Could be possible.

If he had an accident and someone is caring for him, this person would be surely more focussed to cure him instead of contacting other people, especially when you don't have a common language. At least as long as this Person doesn't know that his family is desperately searching for him.

Would be really interesting to find people who talked to Jonathan around the time when he talked to the Shantaram-reading lady.

Ive read a few stories of travellers who have gone on treks etc and got hurt. Only to be found by people from remote villages who then cared for them until they recovered!

So even though I am not remotely religious i will be praying for some news!

David, from the details and description you have provided, iam pretty confident that Jonathan is definitely there, possibly around rishikesh or with in Uttarakhand. This iam saying based on my own experience, where i did a similar search for a missing person who comes from a wealthy background in India and was traced to rishikesh after 3 months of search. The person is of the same age group, had relationship problems and got heavily influenced by what she saw & learned in rishikesh. She deliberately made herselves aloof and did not get in touch with anyone for 3 months. All the information you have provided about Jonathan and his belongings point to something very similar. The person iam talking about came back to one of the metro cities in India after her voluntary exile and after a week, went back to rishikesh again.

I have seen many many foreign tourists, aged between 23-40, most of them with some family/personal issues ended up in rishikesh. Most, if not all of them came for 2-3 days initially and kept on extending their stay in rishikesh for months. A lot of them i spoke to said they feel very liberated in rishikesh and also learnt a lot of things they never knew before. I have a strong feeling Jonathan is in a similar state of mind and the environment in rishikesh motivated him further.

Announcing a reward to trace him is tricky. It may work for good or you may be flooded with false alarms.

What we need now are practical responses and I guess this applies to those of you who have been to the area or who are presently there.
I have requested one of my very good friends to look out for Jonathan in Almora. I have also requested him to put a poster at his shop, which is frequented by a lot of foreigners.

Hope some good news is waiting!

David & Lynda

I really feel your anguish on Jonathan's disappearance. I have quoted some of the relevant points (IMO) that you wrote in so much detail and have wondered about what it tells us.

There is something that I believe has not been brought up. From what I know, mobile phone operators are able to track down the location of a device (maybe similar to a GPS signal). Did he have an Indian mobile #? Who was the carrier? Contacting them may be very useful in tracking down the location of the mobile phone and hopefully Jonathan (yes, I know that you found his charger, but, these are interchangeable and he could have used someone else's that fit). I am perplexed why he would not keep his passport with him and why he has not phoned you since he would know that you'll be concerned about him.

I pray that we get some good news soon.

David, thanks for the extensive update. What a trial it must be. Best of luck to you all, again.

I think some silent retreat (so probably vipassana? I'm not much into yoga or the likes) there around this time had been mentioned earlier on this thread. Namely, that is here:

Near Almora, what would immediately spring to mind is Kasar Devi. Spellings may vary again: Kasardevi, Kesar Devi, etc.

I was in Almora two years ago, but never went up to Kasar Devi even. It's supposed to be something of a quasi-resident traveler/hippie etc. community, ever since the 1920's or so, it attracted some noted artists and writers at the time, as it did later with the beatniks and indeed the hippies and such. I think it's named after a Hindu temple there, ancient I believe (and so probably attracting Hindu pilgrims or at least on significant dates for it), and there is said to be a Buddhist meditation center here.

It should be a little higher up from Almora, I think it's walkable even in a short hike, or there are just taxis plying the route (including shared taxis, I think), perhaps buses even.

Excellent work again. Maybe your friend wants to get some up to Kasar Devi? If anything, there could be people passing by there who may have met Jonathan.

In Almora, there's a popular and friendly small budget and backpacker's hotel, right on the pedestrian mall there (or in fact, just in a sidestreet off it, it's practically on the corner though). I can't think of the name, sorry. It has a small cafe downstairs, also popular with locals btw for tea and a snack. It is, or used to be, in Lonely Planet.

Ah, found it: Bansal Cafe (and so hotel or guesthouse or whatever it may be named), Lalal Bazaar. Would be good to put up a poster here, as well. The owner is a very friendly local man, he may want to think of his further contacts there. (Or maybe it is in fact the shop you mentioned? Wouldn't surprise me. Tell them hi from the guy from Amsterdam who stayed there in January or February of 2010, and feeling somewhat depressed himself. I had a really good stay there, and much appreciated their company. I think he's also in-the-know about that traveler scene there, and their festivals and stuff.)

@david:

Thank you for the update. I'm imagening all your travelling in the last week, including Delhi, with the worries in your mind. Extremely tough....

Lots of thoughts are coming to my mind, it will take me some time to reduce them and to post something useful here.

RWeHavingFunYet and Capt.Mahajan also deserve resounding thanks for their considerable contributions. There may be others too, whose are inadvertently missed out.
