The contact person is Mr. Vijendra and email id is vijendrakapruwan@yahoo.co.in.

Another one:

Have sent an email to all four addresses above with poster attached. However, it is very likely that- at this time of the year- their presence at Joshimath may be less than full strength.

Post from Lynda (Jonathan's Mum)

Quick update for you all, we have had a significant development. Some of Jonathan's things have been found by a small waterfall halfway up the road to Phoo Chatti. It looks like he was camping there. The Authorities are on top of it. We understand a full search of the area will commence asap.

Now that we have this information we can narrow our inquiries. So once more we need your help in asking around. A few questions that might jog peoples memories.

* Has anyone seen Jonathon in the last couple of weeks in the Phoo Chatti area? perhaps with somebody else?

* There is a village above the spot, could he have been there, could he be there now? Unfortunately we don't have the name yet.

It is with your help that we have got this far we cannot thank you enough, you have been a rock.

We thank you all for your support and help to date and ask that you keep hope with us.

Lynda & David

P.S. There are two waterfalls. The first one is up behind an ol temple opposite the new bridge. There are also some small eating places there where you could enquire and show the photo. Many people visit this first waterfall everyday, so i dont think this would be a peaceful place to camp. The second waterfall is much more inaccesible and quite hard to locate. Though is a lovely spot to camp. Also there is a place to stay at Patnna village.Which is only about 15 minutes pass this second waterfall.

I havent seenthe doctor for two years now and he did not have a phone then, though of course that is a long time in the technological world so he possible may have one now. If you have any one on the ground in Rishikesh village Patna is easy to find. The path is almost directly opposite Phool chatti ashram. It will take about an hour to walk, there is no road just a path going up and up. Patna is a village of about 30 houses only sporadic solar electricity but good people i have stayed there and visited many times. The authorities who have been informed w ill know all this though. Maybe if you are sure the things found are Jonathans and therefore it is a concrete link you could maybe think of offering a reward to the local people for any information that leads to finding him. This would get people talking about him more and may jog someones memory.

Just to note that they were rock blasting around the waterfall when stef was there at the start of Feb. He remembers saying that it was potentially dangerous. We hope that Jonathan is fine and that he is not hurt somewhere as Lynda mentioned she thought he could be many pages ago. Good luck, we hope you find good news. Thinking of you a lot and wishing goodness

Just to keep our placenames straight again, so that place would be known as Phool Chatti, apparently also spelled Phoolchatti (as so often, there may no doubt be more variations. Poolchatti? Etc. I don't know that, but it would be very possible.)

They were mentioned in an early stage on this thread by KulluKid as a known ashram there; the Capt. then contacted them by phone, and reported that:

It has (therefore, I presume) also been included in his consolidated lists so far, of places he's contacted:

[... etc.]
That should of course by no means be a reason not to follow up on it any further.

I don't know that place or the area, at all, I take it it's an ashram, not sure if it's also a placename there? It appears and is said everywhere to be very close to Rishikesh, indeed.

What looks like official sites for the ashram (the first also mentioned for them by KulluKid before) would be at

http://www.phoolchattiyoga.com/ and
http://phoolchattiashram.org/ (looks like essentially an older version of the first one).

Phool Chatti (the ashram) can be found at Google Maps, however there is sadly precious little further data/info there on that precise immediate area. E.g., this Patna wouldn't appear to show up there. (Nearest placename if that's what it is given there would be Shivpuri. A common placename elsewhere in the country btw, take care of what you're looking at, should you search on it; it simply means City of Shiva, I think.)

I did a Google search on this Doctor Chandan Singh, Patna; there are hits, but be aware Patna is also and rather more notably the capital of the state of Bihar, much further east, and has nothing to do with here. Presumably most if not all of those hits are to there. A combination of his name + Phool Chatti doesn't seem to throw up much of anything.

Chandan Singh and as confirmed by those hits, also many international ones, wouldn't have to be an uncommon name; I don't know what Chandan stands for, but Singh means lion, and is a very common surname notably but not exclusively among Sikhs.

Good luck with it, and hoping for the best with you.

sorry, ruths mistake, the waterfall they were blasting at was not at phoo chatti. so thats insignificant.

Is there not usually a police man sitting at the bridge crossing to phoo chatti road? Any time I passed the bridge there was always a police man sitting there.

I wasnt on that road this time but i do remember from my last visit to rishakesh there was a cave with six babas up in the mountains around there.. again probably insignificant. they are all over the place there. just interested in this angle again as there were pictures a few pages back of him with a guru.

anyway, still willing good news. Stef

Thanks for ruling out that rock-blasting possibility, phew.

Really not by means of pedantry, but just to let David & Lynda and other searching parties and perhaps not very familiar with India know that "baba" is a common form of address for sadhus. It is at once an honorific title, and something of a loving informal way to refer to them (or so it seems or has been my understanding in daily usage).

(To get a further hold on this sadhu concept, just do a web search on it. I said before that Wikipedia always needs to be taken with a firm pinch of salt, since it is made by and for users, so anyone can produce those articles. They then ideally get corrected by those same users amongst themselves, but and so this doesn't prevent a lot of uncorroborated nonsense from being written there. Still, it can always make for a swift and easy start on many a subject, and will usually feature handy further links and footnotes and further references at bottom of their articles: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sadhu.

I'm still not at all convinced this is necessarily the way Jonathan went, though obviously I don't know him nor his character. Like me, he may just have felt some natural affinity to them; whilst his camping alone if that's what he did, instead of say following them to one of their camps, or indeed put up in some ashram = roughly spiritual community, would rather seem to bespeak to me someone who perhaps rather goes it alone, observing it all from a distance greater or smaller. But then who am I to say, obviously.

I guess the thought just naturally bubbled up among members here because indeed, it happens that people "disappear" there, only because they have taken up this way of life, and giving up on attachments including family ties etc. can be very much a part of it. Someone who comes under the sway of some convincing guru (= literally simply teacher, but here of course taken in a spiritual sense, as a spiritual "master") may well feel compelled to do so. Perhaps burn your passport, indeed, and with any luck "liberate" yourself from material ties by handing over all your belongings and money to said guru, duh. But it doesn't conversely mean this is what happens to all of them.

Then another thing is not all of these guys -- they are predominantly male, though there exist female sadhus, known as sadhvi I think. They are however by far a minority -- may be quite as kosher or bona fide as one might wish for. It can be a handy social niche for all sorts of outcasts and drop-outs; and a working one to an extent, if you ask me, but it falls beyond the scope of this thread. But so their "spiritual" leanings may not so rarely be questionable, and there's plenty a charlatan or misfit to be found among them, consciously so or otherwise. One may need to take care with some of these.

It can't be ruled out and must certainly be taken into consideration -- so either to disappear among them, or to be maltreated by some of them --, but I so far see no reason to let notably the first option, so of the attempt to become one of them, be the main angle of investigation, either.)
