There are one or two points that we were talking here tonight.

Ok context, Stef was probably the last (so far traced) traveller in Lax man Jula to meet Johnathan. From what he remembers it was 31 Jan/ 1st Feb. Jonathan approached them, he was friendly and we are going back over the conversation over and over and piecing it together it with info on this.

1> Stefan is not so sure that he was on a 2 week trek from 14-28. Was he taking day trips out of Laxmanjula? Thats what Stef had been doing. However, Stefan and Dermot had been in Laxmanjula from 24 Jan and had not met him before their meeting on the 31st.
David mentioned the waterfall, there is a waterfall 7 k on the far side of the bridge and there are people passing along this way everyday.

2> His cell phone didnt look like anything high tech. Is he stripping back on possessions. Going with a cheap model for travelling? Might help regarding trying to get a gps/ trace on the phone.

Stefan was pretty convinced that he wasn't interested in the Sadhu way of life from their conversations but Stefan has just said, 'well its India, you cant rule anything out.'

3> Jonathon didnt really seem sure where he was going to go on his treck. He was vague about details and didnt have kit/ guide. Stef did say to Jonathon that 'its not like Nepal where you arrive along to a village at the end of every day.' Stefan does not think he went high, at this time of year and

4> From reading the piece on his website regarding Kashmir, it seems he is trusting to that Kashmiri guide, he was kind of duped into going somewhere cold. If he was supposed to be going on a treck, would he not have bought some kit, would there not be records of this in any of those shops

I hope that you have a great useful lead.

good luck

Ruth and stef
Thanks for updating your information guys. Always good to get insights, but even better to get news!

Yeah, thanks for that. I missed 'Iantly' in the post.

Anyway, I've sent him a PM and a link to this thread. I'll let you know if I hear anything.

Then he could be heading for a trek to Hemkund or valley of flowers, but there will be lot's of snow up there now, he may even be trying to get to badrinath, but i imagine the road will be closed.

I have sent my standard email to Chardham Hotels, which runs Shailja guest house Joshimath- and many other hotels in that area. I have told them about a possible sighting at Joshimath and sent them the poster too.

Hi Stef and Ruth. Thankyou for coming here to share your information as well as with Jonathan's mother. All the tidbits are useful because something might give a clue to people here who are familiar with travelling in the area.

Would it be possible to ask the two Australians to come and post here too? They might have some other clues or insights.

Do Stef or Dermot have any photos from their meeting with Jonathan? Because if so they would be the most recent from before he went missing.

Only to reiterate, yes, from this thread, it seems the embassy and local authorities have been involved from an early stage.

Indeed; a google search just now throws up many a call on forums etc. btw, most linking back to this thread.

Heheh. Good to see you keep your sense of humor, indeed.

Best again, guys, thanks for the feedback, and good to think this forum might have been of help to you in any way at all (and what wonderful efforts have been going on above, indeed!). Keep it up.

There is another, more recent possible sighting around Nyaneth, which I believe is nearby - again, to be confirmed. The latter sighting said he was with two other people. These are tenuous leads, and recent experience with that pond-dweller from Dharmsala has taught me to tread carefully, so I will get my police contacts to follow these up.
Hi David, it would be helpful if you could provide more details on this lead.

Were the sightings by westerners or Indians & have you met them personally or by phone/email?

Were the 2 people Jonathon was seen with Western or Indian?

I think it makes sense to stay put in Rishi until you have more certain info, however going by Jonathon's Spiritual & trekking interests there is a strong possibility he would head in that direction,so try not to be influenced too much by the "D'sala experience". KK

Indeed, on the possible spelling/transcription issues front, the first is Joshimath, apparently also known as Jyotirmath, or Jyotir Math, and perhaps then some.

Nyaneth rings no bells with me, either -- can anyone tell? (Nainital is the closest I can think of, but seems an unlikely candidate.)

Hi David, i realise how busy you must be meeting police, press etc, but it would be good if you could say when you are going to or have contacted Ashrams/hotels etc suggested by IMers then you & Capt are not chasing each others tails/trails.KK

Hopefully somebody is well on to his mobile phone data/records by now? I think they are potentially crucial to the timeline & may show something other than the last point/time of contact on February 3rd.

Also & along those same lines, if he did need hospitalization & did not have any ID on him - how likely would it be for these medical institutions to reach out to the media for help in identifying? Very fast & efficiently, very slow, or it depends more on the hospital in question?

I don't know how easy (or hard) a task this might be to carry out fully but if he was involved in some kind of a traffic accident or fall etc., - then that's probably where he would most likely be.

It would be good if David or the Irish Embassy could confirm that both these things are being/have been done.
