KK, can you think of other temple towns or places in Tamil Nadu which he might have been attracted to after Tiruvannamalai?

If it is Sivarathiri, I think Isha Yoga Centre, Coimbatore also needs to be considered.

Lot's of Temple towns in that area such as Kanchipuram etc but if i was J i'd be thinking Rameswaram or Madurai.

Such a shame we didn't get to hear about this for 2wks Mahabalipuram is such a small place it could have been completely combed/searched within a couple of days. KK

You've done some great work there Jeves!

Now some questions for Indiamikers from Tamil Nadu: I don't know if David and Lynda are thinking of doing newspaper ads at the moment, but if they were which papers would have the widest readership in Tamil Nadu? Not just Chennai but the smaller towns too.

I think of The Hindu as being a paper that's read a lot in Chennai. What other English language papers? And more importantly what Tamil newspapers?

Including, but not limited to...

The New Indian Express
Deccan Chronicle
Times of India.

All of them possibly more widely read than The Hindu

I don't know about Tamil-language papers. Sadly I doubt I'll ever be able to read them. There is one called something like Dinamani, which I think is sister paper to New Indian Express. (oh! I even spelt it right: added the link) (added links for the above too.)

Would suggest contacting Broad Lands Lodge. It is the backpackers' haunt in Chennai.

JuliaF, there is an English IMer "DavidGodman" who's lived in Thiruvannamalai for last 20odd yrs he's wrote many books on Ramana Maharishi etc & is very respected at Ramanashram,he may not want to get involved but if anyone can get posters displayed at the Ashram bookshop & surrounds he can,it may be worth approaching him. "Very thin, with long hair, in slightly shabby saffron clothing and carrying a small brown bag on his shoulder" - if the cloths this person was wearing were indeed saffron, and with the little richly decorated shoulder bag of a sadhu that typicallly he has always with him containing everything necessary, this does classically sound like the garb of a sadhu; in which case the bag and contents are likely to be all the person is regularly travelling with - one wonders if the bag was anything at all like this -

That person may actually be a sadhu, well able to get about India so lightly and probably hanging out in sadhu samaj (family). But where was his kamandal: water jug with a wide handle.

Not answering personal questions is about that history being redundant, when the person became sadhu (twice-born you might say). Of course it could also be about something to hide. I'm sure there'd be more clues from the bus conversation that may help narrow down other characteristics, and so indicate pro or novice.

The sighting was on a bus from Thiruvannamalai to Chennai - suggesting a northwards progression = Kumbh... although somewhat lightly baggaged for the cold North.

Other options then India?

Great news!

If he was/is in South of India it's easy to go from there
to one of the other islands.
Sri Lanka has a lot of festivals in Jan/Feb some of them
spiritual. They recently opened a boat-tour from India
to Sri lanka ( closed earlier because of the civil war)
in Sri Lanka they are not so hard with papers and passport-
controls at hotels as in India.

Sorry! I haven't read all the messages in this thread,
what kind of religion is Jonathan fond of?

Unfortunately it was only much later that the person came accross Jonathan's picture and recognised him instantly as the man on the bus. I posted on IndiaMike after contact was made with me and we had spoken at length.

I am very consious that time has lapsed and much grouind can be covered in two weeks. I am hoping that he may still be in the area as he was carrying nothing but a small brown shoulder bag.

By the way, he was wearing saffron robes rather than western dress.

So:
1) If he is still in the area where is he staying? who could he be with?

2) If he is on the move where to? is there a recognised likely travel route here?

Thank you all for all the information so far it is very much appreciated.

Lynda

Ah yes, David Godman is indeed a member of Indiamike but he's not been online here since 16th December.

Lynda, here is the wikipedia entry on him http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Godman

and here is his own site with an email address to contact him. http://davidgodman.org/contact/contact.shtml

He seems to be an excellent person to contact, and as you say KK even if he does not wish to get involved himself he might be able to give advice and use his influence to get posters displayed etc at the ashram.

My tuppence-worth is that the focus should be on Tiruvannamalai. Mamallapuram is a small place and should be fairly easy to plaster with posters. But Tiruvannamalai is a spiritual centre and it's possible that he had been there some time. There could be people there who can give more information to confirm that it was him, and who might know where he was heading. Also as he was carrying so little with him he might have been planning to return there.

(But yes, Paleface is right, maybe his entire possessions were in that small bag and that's the whole point.)
