Mamallapuram is a big tourist destination in southern India, a real traveler's hangout type place. It is also quite small and compact. If you can spread the word down there ASAP about Jonathan's possible arrival/presence, then I'm quite confident he'll be spotted, if indeed it was him on that bus.

Can you tell us what date the sighting happened on?

Best of luck with this, everyone on IM is rooting for you!

. Where he could be going?
- any pilgrim routes that include this area or any spiritual festivals that he could be attending.
With the Mahasivarathri holiday coming up soon the Jyotirlinga in Rameswaram would be a destination along a pilgrim route. And its the nice time of year to wander down that way from Chennai.

Best of luck to you and yours.

Lynda, this does sound promising and we all hope it will turn out to be good news for you.

I have made a post in the Tamil Nadu forum directing people here to this thread.

I'm sure someone will come forward to do a Tamil translation of the poster for you. Could you post the English text that you would like translated? I'm sure also that we have members who are very familiar with Tiruvannamalai and Mamallapuram who will be able to share contacts with you.

Good luck

Hi Lynda
Happy to hear good news.

I visited Mamallapuram 3 years ago. I remember like minded people from Hotel Mamala Heritage. Here is e-mail address info@hotelmamallaheritage.com
It is not a hotel where Jonathan could stay but they could give you information what is on in Mamallapuram.
Another contact is worldpeacesculp@yahoo.com It is Hari Krishnan who makes sculptures.

Others hotels vinodhara@yahoo.com and seabreezehotel@hotmail.com

I have a contact to Pastor who cares about orphanage Mariamma Children Home Trust ezekiahponraj@rediffmail.com or mch2003@rediffmail.com

Regarding Tamil language, they speak Tamil, so ask somebody to translate the poster.

Kind regards
Ivana

He could very well have been visiting Ramanas ashram probably one of the most visited ashrams by westerners in India. If he stayed there they very well might have a record.Though if he is travelling without a passport he may have given a different name.As he was travelling with only a small bag it may indicate that he had somewhere specific to stay.I dont know the date but Shivaratri will be celebrated at Ramanas ashram soon and will draw thousands of pilgrims and he may go there for that.
I hope it is him and he is safe and well, though of course it would indicate that as he was travelling alone he is not being forced to do anything against his will and therefore doesnot want to contact his family at this time.Which of course is his right. Please try to insure that the person who claims to have seen him is genuine and if possible get someone there on the ground with some money to bribe or offer a reward for in fomation. Good luck.

I've just been doing a bit of searching about the Sri Ramana Ashram in Tiruvannamalai.

Here is their website with Contact Details http://www.sriramanamaharshi.org/contact-us/

Phone: +91- 4175- 237200+91 9244937292
Email: ashram@sriramanamaharshi.org

And from Indiamike, a post by atala
Quote:
You can stay near the ashram and visit as much as you wish; it is a place open to anyone without any restriction, that is, also tourists come just for sight-seeing.

A convenient place to stay is just one block before you come to the ashram from the town-side, at a place called Agni Lingam.

I have stayed there twice. Last year at this guest-house (for Rs 250 or so)
http://www.hillviewresidency.com/index.html

Before that at the house just in front of it, with a Kashmir store downstairs, they rent two or three rooms upstairs. Actually I liked it better there than in the guest-house next door.

Just a few steps from there is the local German Bakery with a nice open roof-top restaurant with great meals.

If you are coming early in December, the choice of guest-house will be yours. I don't think you have to make a reservation ahead. For Xmas time however, you should do it.

Tiruvannamalai
Hi Paul,
Having lived in Tiru 4 years (longest continuous span of time was 8 months because of the oppressively hot weather), I can tell you that the most crowded time is during the Deepam festival in November. Thousands of people circumnabulate Arunachala 24/7, ending with the lighting of a ghee filled cauldron at the top of the holy hill. It is very exhilarating to observe and participate in the pradakshina, alongside groups of people who are chanting all the way around the "hill."
I recommend that you reserve a room at the ashram as soon as you have a fixed date. December and January is when most foreigners come as these are the months when well-known spiritual teachers hold satsangs and retreats. While at the ashram you can easily find your next place to stay.
I have stayed at the ashram a number of times and recommend that you make this a priority, for as many days as you are allowed. I definitely do not recommend that you stay in town - there are many guest houses near the Ramana Ashram. Even though this area is also becoming more and more developed, it is more accessible to the hill, to Skanda ashram & Virupaksha cave, to the Ramana Library (which is wonderful, and well-endowed), and shops where you will find many organic foods from Pondicherry.
Jyoti
from Trip to Thiruvannaamalai.

I agree with Captain Kit Carson that it will be important to get someone on the ground in Mamallapuram as soon as possible, as well as asking around in Tiruvannamalai to try to get confirmation that it really was him on that bus.

I'm trying to think of any Indiamikers who have been planning trips to that area and could be there at the moment but I'm drawing a blank just now.

Lynda, just for info, Mamallapuram used to be called Mahabalipuram and some people still use the old name and it is sometimes shortened to Mahabs.

I have been thinking along the same lines as Captain Kit Carson regarding the small bag and the possibility that he has a specific place to stay. Perhaps this was simply a trip to Mamallapuram / Mahabalipuram / Mahabs (thank you JuliaF - knowing the various names can save us from confusion and oversights) This would suggest that he may be part of a group which provides him with lodgings. Somebody mentioned that the Jains are one group there - are there others and can they be contacted (with the assurance that we will respect and support Jonathan’s choices once we establish that he is OK)

Possibly most importantly I agree that as he was travelling alone he is not being held against his will in a physical sense. However, until I know otherwise I have to keep in mind the possibility that he could have been subjected to NLP or perhaps he is suffering from a form of India Syndrome. I am told that he was functioning normally, talking intelligently and was not on drugs but that looking at his eyes it was clear that he was also in a trance-like state and made no reference to anything personal – where he was from, his name, family, his journey anything really of this world. The discussion was purely about spirituality.

Given this and our abiding belief that if he could contact me he would, I need to ensure that he is in a position to make 'free will' decisions and that he is where he wants to be. I absolutely agree, no matter how hard it may be that if this is the case he is entitled to be out of contact for as long as he wishes and we will respect that. The thing is I need to know that he is OK and does not need help and I will not unless we find him.

Thank you all for your research and advice, we are taking it all on board and will act on it. It would be wonderful if there were any IndiaMikers or their contacts in the area who are willing to help on any level. That would also be hugely appreciated.

With your continued support I am more confident than ever that we have a very good chance of finding Jonathan. Thank you, Lynda

Chennai is an hour drive away from Mahabs. We have a number of members based there who will be willing to help out in whatever way possible I expect.

Great news David & Lynda, here's hoping!..........
A good place to put a poster would be Nautilus Cafe Restaurant

9/4 Othavadai St, Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu 603104, India
it's run by a French man & his Indian family who's lived there for 20yrs or so & speaks good English. Most tourists eat here at some point,it's a tiny place so easy to spread the word.
Maybe you should call them & ask to speak with the French manager.
Another thing you should do is contact Auroville nr Pondicherry http://www.auroville.org/index.htm & ask them to display some posters it's full of westerners on a Spiritual search, I'm not sure what response you will get there though,you could also contact the individual GH's there;
http://www.aurovilleguesthouses.org/...==&css=avgh-2a

Did they describe the saffron clothing to you? were they robes or western style etc?
I will contact you privately regarding what you say above about respecting J's free will etc.
Good Luck KK

That sounds very positive. Lynda. Was an Irish accent ascertained by this person? Funny - some of us can id accents a mile away .... while others have a 'tin ear' when it comes to discerning this feature of speech. Nevertheless, a very important/distinctive and case-narrowing characteristic.

It may be a good idea to get posters spread around Thiruvannamali,which is probably the most visited town in India for westerners on a Spiritual Search/quest there are hundreds of long term westerners staying here & if J had come from there someone must have seen him. Here's some G/H details;
