Thanks for that Lynda, it must have been very hard for you..

Speaking for myself in the context of the thread I asked for some insight into the situation in the hope of offering some reassurances, to a mum and dad who might be over cautious because it's a country like India
People who haven't been to India often have a rather bleak picture of the country in their head.

However now that you have provided the detail it would seem reassurances are probably redundant right now...

That's not to say there isn't hope there is but your fears are real and considered.
I apologise if I caused any offence, this wasn't my intention, I was simply looking for background info, in order to better assess the situation.

Good luck with the search and I hope everything turns out for the best.

Latest development on Jonathan Spollen

I can't see a moderator online, but am posting this PM I received from David; it appears that he wants to open a new thread in the Himachal Pradesh forum as indicated in bold (mine) after doing some stuff (attaching original notice etc) that only moderators can do.

From David- except for salutations etc, this is the complete message. Sent approximately 3 hours ago.

Quote:
I met someone today who saw and spoke with Jonathan several times around the end of January, in Rishakesh.
Jonathan was tall, thin, bearded and with long hair, looking quite pale. He had had a fall on his trek and had had to return early from the mountain. He also had a stomach bug.
By the time he spoke to his Mum a couple of days later, he was in good spirits and was talking about going on a trek for a couple of weeks. He said, "Don't worry, Mum, it's kind of like a spiritual journey."
I am thinking he would have been too weak to walk far, and he would have known that he needed rest. He is a logical thinker. He also looks for a story. I am hazarding a guess here, but Dharamshala would have interested him, because of the Dalai Lama, and because he may have decided at that point that he was going to make that spiritual journey.
What I would like you to do is to attach this commentary to the current thread, and to open a thrnew ead in the area where Dharmshala, with my original notice and with this attached to it.
I would probably mess this up - hope you can figure out the best way of doing it.

My opinion-- some of the info in this thread is valuable and should not be buried if a new thread is started. Perhaps useful posts can be moved too, and perhaps the title of this thread, in any case, should reflect/add Dharamsala

I am bringing this to the attention of the mod team too.

Edit Requesting the good folk here who have posted the notice elsewhere- on facebook, for eg, to update their information there to reflect the possibility of Dharamsala.

The thing is, his visa expired on 21st February so the authorities tell me that no ashram or trekking company would take him on board without a valid visa. Does anyone know if this is true?
Lyn, his Mum, thinks he is likely to head for an Ashram in a beautiful location. My feelings are that he is holed up in the mountains somewhere, possibly living in one of those small villages, out of cell phone coverage.
Just one thought. If he knew about VISA will be expired 21st February, he could go to Nepal to sort his VISA. Maybe I am wrong. But there could be possibility for "the big trek".

Mod Note
I am creating a new thread in the Himachal Pradesh forum.

EDITED
But I have now closed it down, as it will lead to confusion. If anyone sees it, they can post here, in the original thread.

Potentially critically important information. Especially so if his mobile/communications device had any GPS capabilities? The last communications attempt should be recorded by his service provider. It may also have a specific GPS location recorded with it.

Is anybody checking on this?

Reason being that I'm not certain that a missing person report filed in India would be quick or able to access/pull phone records in Hong Kong or Ireland .... or wherever his service provider is based/registered.

It may be something that a family member may have to carry out on their own & to expedite the search.

The big trekking routes may be off limits in winter but since he told his Mother that he was going on a trek, during their last conversation, I'd be asking around and taking the posters to points of departure. Travel agents would know all of the possibilities.
Certainly in Dharamsala a lot of people do short treks in winter and many attempt longer ones. I suspect the same would hold true elsewhere.
That said, all possibilities should be considered.

Thank you, the mother of Jonathan for finally giving some fact to substantiate any claims of a missing person!

Hope you see him soon!!!

Still unable to get a response from that Himachal Vipassana centre on the phone- have emailed them.

(David, if you read this and if you like, you can post here/PM me places you want to call and check and I will call for you- or email if I can't get through. No details will be needed, just the name of the place and a phone number, if you have it. You may be able to avoid language issues with a few places this way, and also have somebody doing grunt work when you have a lot to do)
