David,

I was reading the site information from Dehradun Vipassana centre. There is a ten-day course in progress right now:

Quote:
24-Feb - 06-Mar 10-Day In Progress
From friends of mine who do these silent retreats regularly, I can tell you that it is a very intense experience. Your son is perhaps unaware that he is being called as "missing", if he is deeply engrossed in a Vipassana retreat. All contact with the outside world is taken away. The participants do not speak for ten days and they do not have mobile phones or even reading material.

OK, perhaps this is too easy an answer! I wish it were.

Yes, anything at all! Any words that he might have mentioned to his family or friends. 'guru', 'retreat', 'trek', 'Shiva' etc. Also any distinct habits, likes, dislikes, preferences, pet peeves that might narrow the search &/or give similarly minded people an idea/clue.
We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. ~

David, I know nothing about Vipassana except that it involves silent retreats. The participants are not able to communicate with the outside world. Theyyamdancer gave the link to a Vipassana centre in Dehradun. Here it is again:
http://www.salila.dhamma.org/

There is a retreat going on there now according to the webpage.

In my last conversation with him, he had talked about going to an Ashram, and being a typical Dad, I told him he would get brainwashed and have all his hair cut off. This might have made him more determined to try it out. However, he also mentioned to his Mum that he wanted to do a big trek, so we are looking at both possibilities. The thing is, his visa expired on 21st February so the authorities tell me that no ashram or trekking company would take him on board without a valid visa. Does anyone know if this is true?
Lyn, his Mum, thinks he is likely to head for an Ashram in a beautiful location. My feelings are that he is holed up in the mountains somewhere, possibly living in one of those small villages, out of cell phone coverage.

Vipassana is a 10 day meditation retreat,so this would explain him being missing for a while. I know an american guy who spends a few mths in Rishikesh every year around this time & he's into spirituality & knows his way around all the Ashrams. He may be able to help you find your way around, i think he's there now i can try & contact him & put you both in touch if you like? KK

It's possible he's snowed in at some small village without mobile or email connection. Not all ashrams will ask to see your visa/passport.

Originally Posted by PeakXV View Post Yes, I would agree, Capt. There was one additional article on his Kashmir trek(April 2010). He talks about definitely returning to Kashmir some day, but never again in Wintertime, so my guess would be that this would rule the more northerly destinations/treks out.

Two thoughts. It's quite possible that he still had Dharamsala on his mind after having missed it on the previous trip. We all know what it's like to fill a void & get a place crossed off of our mental todo lists. And Dharamsala appears to have a particularly strong attraction for travelers.

The other thought was that his stories from his archive were all of a Muslim/Islamic interest and he is very, very good on these topics. This could be significant & maybe a literary trend that he hoped to continue on this trip. Or since he does not appear to have written for that Newspaper(thenational.ae) since the Kashmir article - my question would then be, has he started a partnership with any newspapers?

If so, has he received any new specific assignments that may narrow down the search at all? Perhaps something was mentioned in an email or text to his family, close friends &/or colleagues.

Just thinking out loud & hopeful that it might ring a bell or expedite the search in some small way. Below are quotes(possibly pertinent) from his second article with links to it & his archive page:

Glad this one didn't slip under the radar. How far is dharmsala from Laxman Jhula?
