I am planning to leave from Pune on the 21st of Jan and i reach Delhi and start my trip from there. I have allocated 5 days for this trip. Please guide me so that i can cover all the nearby places also. The 5 days includes a day or two for Delhi also.

Take note it will probably get quite busy (read: more than jam-packed) up there, because of next year's Kumbh Mela...

Yes ! It will be Kumbha Mela time then....

If it's only a visit for site seeing and not for attending Kumbha Mela, my suggestion will be to postpone the trip till the mela is over....

Hi Folks,

Thanks for the inputs. I am from South India so I do not have much idea about the Kumbh Mela, though i have heard about it a lot its just that i have not come across any one who has seen it personally. Just out of curiosity would like to know, i plan to land in Haridwar on 22nd or 23rd Jan and then travel to Rishikesh, by that time the Holy Snan would have been completed right, so it should be relative free is what i feel. Please let me know your views.

Please note that i am not trying to offend anyone here, but just expressing my views. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Kumbham is a month long. You need to make definite staying arrangements.

In post #4 of that above Kumbh Mela thread, there is a listing of major dates. Said there to go on till April 28th.

I've never been yet, but wouldn't necessarily expect it to become all that "quiet" inbetween those dates. Maybe the difference between massive crowds and absolutely massive crowds, rather. (I suppose that period from mid-Feb. to mid-March may or may not be somewhat quieter. I really don't know.)

For staying there, I'd just start ringing around with some places (pick some from a guidebook or something) well in time, so as soon as you have some idea of when you'll want to be there. Just rocking up there would seem not recommendable to me, no.

(Word on this board has it btw that arriving in Haridwar for the festival other than by train -- which will no doubt book out way ahead, so a reserved ticket if that's what you want would be another thing to start looking into well ahead --, you'll get dumped an hour's walk outside of town. On packed roads, I would imagine.)
