Haridwar - kedarnath - Badrinath on May'09

we will visit Haridwar - Kedathnath - Badrinath on 12th May to 18th May. Please help me to plan my programme accordingly.

please suggest me when are you planning to leave from kolkatta.And suggest me mode of transport you like to opt. If you are planning to use public transport then it is better to book GMVN package tour. Go to their web site GMVNL.com.
I can sugest you but first give me detil of your plan and budget.

Reaching Haridwar on 13/05/2009 at 6 p.m. approx.

I preferred Local Bus service from Haridwar to Gaurikund.

GMVNL tour is more expensive for me.

Staying arrangement are no settled till date.

Please suggest in this regrad

okie........ as you said you are reaching on 13th may in the evening. So your tour plan will be as follows:

13th may: stay in haridwar and have bath in Ganga at Har ki Pouri in the late evening(if train reach in time)
you can stay in haridwar in any ashram or trust. I know one trust/ashram. it is near Khanna Hotel and its name is Tayal trust. They charge Rs 100 per night for non A/C double bed room. I will give you their contact number tomorow.

As I never travelled by Roadways bus so I can not give suggestion about Roadways bus service. But as your tour plan is only for 5 days for badrinath and kedarnath I suggest you to take taxi for 5 days from Haridwar as it will be more comfortable and you can explore some more places.So on 13th you book taxi from taxi stand in Haridwar.


14th may: you can take taxi from Haridwar early morning (approx 6 am) and you will reach Rishikesh at around 7 am. visit Laxman Jhoola nad Bharat mandir and have breakfast there at Choti Wala Dhaba. It will take approx 2 hours and after breakfast you start from rishikesh to joshimath(badrinath).
Please note that from Haridwar, Joshimath is approx 280 km and may is season period so you might get traffic jam . So it will be better you start early from Haridwar.

So assuming that you will be free from rishikesh by 9 Am then start your journey for Joshimath. You must stop at Devpryag(after 70 km from rishikesh). At devprayag Bhagirathi from Gangotri and Alaknanda meets and become holy river Ganga. You can have view from Highway only of the holy sangam.
After devpryag you will reach Srinagar with in 3 hours. do not stop at Srinagar for Lunch as it will be crowded and you can stuck in jam also. So it will be better you cross Srinagar and try to reach Rudrapryag which is 34 Km from srinagar. At rudrapryag you can have a view of sangam of Mandakani river and Alaknanda river. Mandikani river comes from Kedarnath and Alaknanda River comes from Badrinath Ji.
I suggest you again not to stop at rudrapryag also for refreshment as from Rudrapryag one road divert to kedarnath and another to badrinath.
Take road for Joshimath(for Badrinath) and approach toward Joshimath and have your lunch on route according to your time.You will reach Joshimath at around 8 pm. Road is very good.

Night stay in Joshimath. There are lot of Hotels run by local at Joshimath.

15th may: Early morning at 6 am start from Joshimath and take first Gate. From joshimath to Badrinath Ji one way traffic is allowed so take first gate at 6.30 am and you will reach Badrinath ji at around 11 am.

Have a holy bath in hot water and have Darshan. do not waste time as you have to come back to Joshimath on same day.

As you have only 5 days so take your breakfast or quick bite while waiting at gate either in Joshimath or vishnupryag.


If possible have Darshan in the afternoon. I suggest you to have some special darshan. Now I do not remember the charges of special darshan. But it will save your time and you can perform Pooja in a very nice way.

I suggest you must come back to Joshimath on the same day as last gate open from joshimath at 4.30 Pm so do your darsahn accordingly.After darsahn if you have time then visit Mana village which is 5 km from Badrinath ji. You can see saraswati river and Vyaas Gufa there.

Come back to joshimath and night stay in Joshimath.

16th may: early morning around 5.30 am start from Joshimath and approach for Gourikund. As you reach Chamoli, Divert and take rout for Gopeshwar. Gopeshwar is around 60 km from joshimath. After 40 Km from gopeshwar you will reach Chopta.
Chopta is very Nice place and you will see beauty of Himalya. Have breakfast here as you will reach Chopta by 9 am.
From chopta ther is trek of 5-6 km for Tungnath temple. Tungnath temple is one of the Panch Kedar and Tungnath temple is having arm of lord Shiva.
As you donot have time it is better take horse and visit tungnath temple. You will explore the virgin beauty of vally and Bugyal.It is one of the most religious place and ravan is said to have perform his Pooja to Lord shiva here.
By 12 noon you come down from tungnath temple and approch for gaurikund.

Have your lunch enroute You will reach Gaurikund in the evening by 5.00 pm

Night stay in gaurikund.

17th may: early morning start trek for kedarnath ji. If possible start at 5 am as you have to come down by late evening. I suggest you to take horse so that you reach kedarnath ji by 12.00 pm. Have darsahna( if possible perform special pooja and take help of local panda to have early darshan)
Come back to Gaurikund(by horse) in the late evening.

Night stay in Gaurikund

18th may: Start from gaurikund at around 7-8 am and you will reach Haridwar back around 5 pm. Perform aarti at Har ki pauri in haridwar at 6.30 pm, if possible.

i donot know the detail of your return ticket.

I suggest you to make your travel plan for 6 days instead of 5 days. you will start from haridwar on 14th may and will come back on 19th may. So that you can stay one night at kedarnath ji and perform your pooja properly.

If you want to Travel by bus only and you have only 5 days in hand then either you can visit badrinath ji or kedarnath ji.

Tour pan for kedarnath ji:

14th morning: take bus from haridwar for gaurikund early morning and night sty in gaurikund
15th morning: trek kedarnath ji and night stay in kedarnath ji
16th may: come back to gaurikund and reach gaurikund by 2 pm(max) and take local jeep for chopta(if possible) night stay at chopta
17th may: morning visit tungnath temple and take local jeep upto chamoli. Night stay in chamoli
18th may: back to haridwar.

Badrinath tour

14th may: take early morning bus for joshimath.
15th may: take local jeep for badrinath ji and nigh stay at badrinath ji
16th may: take local jeep to joshimath(early morning) and visit Auli which is 12 km from joshimath and stay at auli(if possible) else come back to joshimath
17th amy: take bus for rishikesh night stay in rishikesh
18th may rishikesh to haridwar

Your suggest tour programme is really attacktive.

I must tink about your suggest plan.

But only Kedarnathji darshan is not good I think, so I must try to cover both Kedarnathji & Badrinathji also.

Can you help about fare of small car form Haridwar to Gaurikund and Gaurikund to Barinath & back to Haridwar via Rishikesh total trip. (14th May to 18/19th May).

sorry for late reply.... Car rental will be approx Rs 1800.00(inclusive of driver food/stay) per day from haridwar for Indica. For non A/C it will be rs 1600.00 per day.

As you have now 7 days so I suggest you new tour plan.

13th: Night stay in haridwar and arrangement for cab.
14th: early morning depart from haridwar and reach Gaurikund late evening. I suggest not to stop unnecessary because of yatra season you might face some traffic jam.... night stay in gaurikund
15th: gaurikund to kedarnath(night stay)
16th: kedarnath> gaurikund and reach gaurikund max by 2.00 pm and try to reach Chopta by 6Pm9 night stay in chopta
17th: early morning visit tungnath temple( 3 km steep trek from chopta and worth visiting to see virgin beauty of himayala) and come back max by 12 noon then after quick bite start for badrinath. do not forget that at joshimath you have to reach by 4.30 pm to catch last gate.... Night stay in badrinath
18th: after early morning darshan visit mana village and see vyaas gufa and starting poit of saraswati river. aftrer lunch start from badrinath for Rudrapryag... night stay in rudrapryag
19th: rudraprayag> gaziabad.

For accomodation you will find small lodges everywhere but I suggest to stay with GMVN and book in advance(if accomodation is available. very less chance to get accomodation because of yatra season) In chopta you have to negotiate with locals for accomodation. they call it chatties.
If you want to cover both kedarnath and badrinath then i suggest to hire a cab from haridwar. to cover both places by using public transport will be hectic and may be not possible to cover both the places in 6 days.

Arre, what else you need, all the info is there already!
Your tour plan is fairly simple, specially if you hire a car. Book yourself in GMVN wherever possible.
First day you can easily reach Gauri Kund from Haridwar. Next night Kedarnath, back to GK (or stay an extra night at Kedar if desired). Now depends on whether you want to stay a night or two in or around Chopta, decide that. After that you head straight for Badrinath. Spend 1 or 2 nights, then head back towards Haridwar. It's a long drive for one day though, so ideally you shud stay a night at Rudraprayag.

Hmm, I'm not familiar with private hotels in that region, only in Joshimath/Badrinath area.
