Hi,
I am planning for a trek to Gomukh-Tapovan on third week of May (have plan to start from Gangotri on 23rd May). Is this the right time for it ? Will there be any chances to have snow at Tapovan during that time ? We also have plan to visit Neel Taal and Meru glacier from Tapovan. If there are possibilities that due to snow we would not reach Tapovan, we might need to change our plan to go somewhere else, like Bagini or Pindari. Please help.

Hello abhishek.s,

Thank you for your prompt response. Any idea about the weather that time ? Since it will be March end, is there a chance of facing cloud/rain there ? I know that, no one can predict weather in mountains, but still ... what would be a general/standard prediction ?

Always expect rain in the afternoon on the hills. There will be snow at Tapovan and you had to cross the glacier at gaumukh to reach tapovan.

What would be good time for Tapovan trek --- May-end or October ? I am asking this because, if there are chances that at May-end it become impossible to reach Tapovan due to snow (or bad weather/heavy rain etc.), then we might reschedule our plan. So please suggest, May-end or October --- what would be good time for this.

What are the staying options at Goumukh? So that we can go to Tapovan Next Day

Is tenting allowed in 1-2 Km radius of Goumukh?

Do we need to stay at Bhojbasa and go to Tapovan Directly from Bhojbasa? Is there any way to avoid that?

If you plan to go to Tapovan then you have to definitely cross Gaumukh which is a glacier. So irrespective of the month you go - you have to cross a glacier.
May has its own advantages and so does Oct. There are various threads which can give you the details - pls go through them.
In fact there is a nice slow paced video from "Chandan Prakash" on youtube - he is also a member here and you can search his blogs for more details.

I don't think you can camp at Goumukh - due to glaciers ecologically fragile nature.

May end is decent enough. Pre Yatra Season. But rains may be a factor (not a big one IMO). Trek to Tapovan though shall be a nightmare crossing Gomukh & Akash Ganga stream.

Hey yash, sorry that I had missed your message. We didn't went Tapovan that time, instead went to Bagini Glacier. Just to be curious, if you had done Tapovan trek that time. How was the weather and what about the snow condition you faced ?
