a very strange news which rockedme from Inside about the Gangotri road which has been closed you to landslide, Army Official say they are clueless as when the highway would be open again, still there has been a heavy slide going on,, many families have been forcibly shifted to safer places...around 50-60 shops and houses has been distroyed till now and around 250 are in danger.
The very good news is till now we dont have any news of causualty,
would be updated regullarly abt the same.

Regards,
Sandeep

Mods, I think it will be better if this section is put out as a new thread so that it is easily visible to those visiting Gangotri and new updates may be posted.

News gathering is pathetic. I was alerted by a one-line ticker on one of the TV channels - can't find anything on the web other than tilak's link. TV said the road had slipped away 70 metres, but not the location. Maybe our resident Uttarkashians have something to add.

jitu - this thread is already a sticky, and with any luck potential travellers to Gangotri will check it beforehand. And it'll stay on the home-page as long as posts keep getting added.

ANYBODY INTENDING TO TRAVEL TO GANGOTRI AND BEYOND IN THE COMING DAYS, CANCEL YOUR PLANS FOR NOW. There are NO alternate routes. Uttarkashi town is also going to get overfilled with stranded travellers, so it'a a very good idea for you not to head there for the moment.

Yes, but my experience suggests that viewers give this thread the last view, and keep on posting about road conditions in different threads, so 'Gangotri route closed' may be more prominent. Anyway, I did not want a new thread to start with so posted it here but later news flow suggested that it might be a bigger issue than anticipated.

Should it not be 'even if no posts are added' instead of 'as long as posts keep getting added'

Question Any chance of Road Getting Cleared by 25th September,2010?

It's always sad when such natural calamity strikes and is bad for travelers as well as people living there! As for me, had been looking forward to a trip to Gangotri & Yamunotri, and I believe many others have been doing the same as well. Though I will be looking out for any news on this thread from now [thanks to tilak for pointing it out to me], but I still wish to know what you people think of the chances of the road getting opened by last week of September? The ITBP had constructed a bridge in 48 hours to keep the Sri Nagar- Leh road running, how long might this take for authorities to mend?

dear.. i don't get how serious this havoc is.. as landslides i hear are common there.. but this appeares to be rreally desastrous.. would this be remediated by next month?? so that travelers in that direction can concentrate on other garhval destinations.. do you people have any thing to advise all travelers??
(for that matter, i have to make my trip to gangotri by next month!! ... )

if there are no more rains in the area then i understand situation will improve in a week. this route cannot be neglected for long as Army people also commute here.
Adarsh dont get worried, things will get normal soon.

About 50 mts of the road has sunk anywhere between 5 to 10 mts towards bhagarathi and it is almost impossible to cross the section even on foot. The land sink is still going on and it will take some time before the road could be opened up for traffic.

not good news coming from Bhatwari. more nearby houses & shops also started getting affected, & sinking of land is continuing slowly.. cracks are visible in more than 100 houses. there are many many yatri on Gangotri are stranded and BRO are searching alternate .. it will certainly take a long time till new road is made...

It's understandable that it's going to take a "Long" time till new road is made. But, the question is, whether that means, whether it would take longer than a month or not!
If so, then, life ahead of Bhatwari to Gangotri is going to stop fully until then?

just had a talk with my friend at Uttarkashi, he said BRO people have come with equipments & machines at Bhatwari... they have assured that they will make new road in 3 days... and yatra will resume very soon...
on this highway there is army movement also, so it had to be built very quick...

Really sad news. I had to stay at Bhatwari due to heavy landslide
few years back while returning from Gangotri. A lodge cum owner of restaurant put us in his lodge just on the road side. Is it possible to post some picture to see the extent of damage caused because of this land slide?

what i feel is we should inquire about the condition ahead bhatwari just before starting to gangotri (preferably from rishikesh/ uttarkashi).. so those who are traveling this route should better have an alternative plan when negation is encountered regarding the gangotri trip.. otherwise we can't miss gangotri anyways.. what do others comment on this??

is this disaster triggered by rains?? i thought monsoons subsided at garhvals for the year!?
