It is possible to do the whole route in one day but it will be very hectic and you will need more than a night's rest to begin your trek to Kedarnath. We did it from Uttarkashi to Gaurikund in about 10 hours when we were driving slowly and stopped a couple of times on the way. In fact on the return journey we trekked down from kedarnath and drove all the way to Uttarkashi and home in a single day leaving Kedarnath at 7.00 am and reaching Uttarkashi at 11.00 pm. Not a good thing to do for a traveller, since we were headed home it made sense. After the drive we didn;t want to leave the bed for two whole days.
You can get Mahindra Max / Scorpios from Gangotri/ Uttarkashi to drive you to Gauri Kund. The last time I asked around from Uttarkashi they wanted 6k and this is a while ago. This includes to and fro journey. From Gangotri it will be a lot more and most of it will depend upon where you want to leave the vehicle.

There is bus/shared jeep service from Gangotri to Uttarkashi. No direct service till Srinagar.

There is a bus service from Uttarkashi to Srinagar. It starts every day in the early morning (5:30-6 a.m. approx). Inquire about it in the bus stand in the previous evening. Booking is not necessary but come early than departure, at least 30-40 minutes to get a good seat. It will reach Srinagar at around 2:30 p.m.

From Srinagar, you can get bus to Rudraprayag, or further till Karnaprayag, or even till Joshimath. It depends.
....life is a journey.....and the journey is more important than the destination........

You are correct. I started from Bhojbasa (near Gomukh) at 8 a.m., reached Gangotri at 2 p.m., took shared jeep to Uttarkashi and reached there at 7 p.m. Went to hotel.

Next early morning, got the bus to Srinagar, and reached Srinagar at 2:30 pm., again got a bus to Rudraprayag, and managed a jeep till Guptkashi, further managed another jeep and reached Gaurikund at 7:30 p.m. It was very very hectic and I would never recommend it. I was running short of time and so did it, also I was alone and with no family.

Dear Mr. Bhaswaran,

Yes, there is direct bus service from Gaurikund to Badrinath in a single day, duration approx. 12 hours. So you have to start early morning. And the bus fare approx. Rs.200/- to Rs.250/-

Thanks a lot. But I have already travelled in this area in October 2007. Although I did not go to Badrinath. The bus fare from Gaurikund to Badrinath via Bhooh-Hartal (Chopta) was Rs. 265 at that time. I came down to Haridwar from Gaurikund directly.

Might be in the morning time. Otherwise, you will always get the buses coming from Rishikesh/Haridwar to Joshimath. You will definitely get something, but in the morning. In the afternoon, things become dicey.

No direct service from Gangotri to Srinagar. You will get from Uttarkashi to Srinagar, daily service, as stated earlier. But in Yatra seasons, there are a lot of different services in various routes, which are not available other times.

Uttarkashi to Srinagar is about 5 hours via the Lambgaon route. I haven't done that trip on a taxi so do not know the fares but should be around 150 or so. Srinagar to Joshimath should be another 3 - 4 hours. Don't know about the fare from Srinagar to Joshimath.
