Hope your journey to Gaumukh had been fine. We, 9 of us including 4 children aged 9 - 12 years shall be on our way to Gaumukh end May. So we long to read about your experiences. We also plan to trek to Tunganath from Chopta. Have you been to Tunganath too ?

Are you sure, you want to do Gomukh with kids ?

Chopta-Tungnath is OK, but Gomukh will be difficult for kids unless they are hardy kind.....

Unfortunately I couldnt make it.

But my friends had gone we had faxed for the permit to Uttarkashi / dehradun and it was ready for us at uttarkashi.
so please do that you might not get it last minute. 150 people allowed / day.

Take warm clothes.

It was raining in gangotri / snowing in Gaumukh on 5 May. quite a tough trek for beginners / my friends found it tough- i doubt what the kids will do.

By end may it should be better but i am not sure.

Took one porter for three people--400rs / day.

Never being to tung nath.

Advice to stay at uttarkashi & gangotri before going to Gaumukh for Acclimitisation.

But the trip was bit hectic but fabulous as my friends said.

Yes ! Pretty tough for kids and weather up there is highly unpredictable.

Acclimatisation is very important, else severe headache will hit you. Air gets rarer as you go upwards.....

Going Tapovan with kids is not a good idea....Tungnath and Chandrashila can be done with kids, but not with ease...its a steep incline....

I am planning a trip to Tapovan in the month of October, can anybody tell me what would be the temperature at that time...
last year I did Tungnath and Chandrashila in the month of October, it was a very cold night at Tungnath, but bearable one....

I visited Gomukh in first week of October and it started snowing. Correct, very unpredictable weather.

Thanks everybody for the advice and info about weather and rates. We are taking adequate precaution accordingly. The kids are tough alright, in fact it is at their insistence that we are walking 5 kms stretch per day now as a practice at the end of which we are flagged out but they are not. But do pray for us that all of us can make it safe and sound, although we now plan to hire four horses just in case we need. As for the conveyance from Haridwar to Gangotri then to Chopta and back to Haridwar (with stopovers at Uttarkashi,Gangotri, Dharali, Ukhimath, Sari, Chopta) can any of you give us the current rates per day for a Sumo or a Travera or a 12 seater bus ?

We are not planning to go to Tapovan as we know it is extemely tough. But Tunganath and Chandrashila is in our itinerary. We had made it to Kedarnath few years back on foot and kids on pittu, now they want to be on their feet too.

The asking rates at Rishikesh are:

MUV like Sumo/Tavera - 2500 perday.

Indica - Rs. 1800 per day.

Winger/Tempo Traveler - Rs. 3800 per day.
