Friends,

A very SIMPLE question.

How long does it take to drive from Delhi AIRPORT to Dehradun by the most direct route on safe and reliable roads. I will be hiring an Innova (or equivalent) with driver.

Please only reply if you HAVE driven on this route in the LAST 12 months - Indiamike is breaming with well meaning but speculative advice which however has failed to address my concern.

I KNOW I can take a train dont want to.

You might like to mention what time you'll leave the airport, makes all the difference.

Dear Sir,
For precise answers, you will have furnish more details like what time flight is landing at Delhi or at what time you plan to start for Dehradun from Delhi.

Resaon being, your travelling time would entirely depend on the traffic intensity you encounter while travelling within Delhi as well as on Delhi-Dehradun highway.

Ideally, it should not take more than 40 minutes to hit Delhi-Dehradun highway (from airport) plus about 5-6 hours for onwards journey.

Having said that, Delhi-Dehradun highway is known for long traffic jams. In my last 5 journeys within last 12 months, I have encountered them twice. So, you will have to factor in it also.

Hope I have been able to answer your query rather than confusing you

Driving from Delhi to Dehradun

Thanks a lot fellow mikeans...the time of travel will be between 7.30am and 8.30am (depending on the flight time/arrival from Ahmedabad.

So please advise on likely duration based on that. Also a general indication the "ideal" route would be greatly appreciated especially if for the route via Nainital (where we need to go).

Also would it make more sense to fly into Chandigarh and drive to Dehradun from there?

Why fly to chandigarh? Dehradun has a airport its own. It will be better than Chandigarh.
You will face traffic jam about all the way at this time except Meerut Muzaffarnagar highway. 5-6 hours journey if you don't face jam.

mj - your tag of Simple Question is actually turning out to be complex. Nainital and Dehradun are on two different routes so don't understand what Via Nainital means?

With a 8:30 am start, you should budget around 8 hours, including a 30 minutes lunch break at Muzzafarnagar (good eating joints there), a 7:30 am start will shave off 30-45 minutes. The route is Del-Ghaziabad-Meerut-Muzzafarnagar-Roorkee(take left)-Chutmalpur-Dehradun, it is approx. 260 km from airport.

Flight from Del-Chd doesn't make any sense unless you are getting a direct or connecting one from Ahd-Chd. Chd-Ddun should be around 175km (don't remember the exact distance) and less than 4 hour drive at any time of the day.

As alternatives you can look to take Delhi-Dehradun flight or take a train from Del-Dehradun or Del-Saharanpur (it is 3 hour train journey plus 1.5 hours drive from Saharanpur-DDun)

6-6.5 hours driving time from IGI plus en-route stops.

Rajat - do you use the Roorkee bypass (Narsan-Iqbalpur-Puhana) yourself? I find it much more peaceful and a bit faster, despite the rail crossing at Iqbalpur (got caught there once out of 4 times, 10 mins wait).
Just FYI, I went up-down 2 weeks ago - 5:30 up with a 7.30 am departure, via Roorkee. And surprisingly 5:45 down with a 2.30 pm departure (I was expecting at least 6 hours), via Iqbalpur (saved about 5-6 mins by this).

Dilliwala - I stick to whichever route I know well as taking a wrong turn can entail more time wastage (I have a bad direction sense both on roads and treks), but I would like to look this one up as Roorkee nowadays has small jams in day time.

Actually, i was only guessing as I have never taken a 7:30 am start from IGI, but around 8:30, getting out of Delhi-Gzb into the clear itself may take upto 1.5-2 hours, 7:30 one may just escape the rush. Last time I took a 10 am start and took 8 hours from North West Delhi, getting stuck in jams at various towns enroute.

Neeraj, Thanks - like ur blogs tho google translation is not ideal. Anyways, thought Chandigarh would make more sense as we can fly direct from Ahmedabad and the road route looks shorter. Reluctantly I am however coming to the conclusion that it might be better to either fly or take a train from Delhi to Dheradun. However we still intend to hire a car and explore the "hinterland" so any suggestions as for a four day three nights journey by road...round trip?

A direct flight Amd-Chd is not a bad idea, as rajat also mentioned. Specially as Chd airport is in the south of the city and close to Panchkula, which allows for a quick exit onto NH 73. Could be covered in 3 hours, depending on traffic. Basically a straight run in, whereas the Del-Ddn train has to circumvent Rajaji National Park.

Then again, if the idea is a drive around the district and adjoining ones, without necessarily wanting to be in Dehradun city, then a flight Del-Ddn also works. Specially since hiring a car in-state will be cheaper than one from Chd.
Choices, choices.

The best option is to take a connecting flight, but if you are travelling by Road, take some steps to avoid traffic jams. After Mohan nagar, just before "Ghaziabad T Point" take left via Raj Nagar extension to reach NH58to avoid jam at the "T Point" and before Meerut take Meerut bye pass. The state highway after Roorkee to Dehradun via Chhutmalpur (the conventional route) is in pathetic state. Innova is OK but really tough for low ground clearance vehicles. Instead of taking left turn at Roorkee crossing (the left arrow will show road to Dehradun) go straight at the crossing into Roorkee city and go straight to Haridwar. From Haridwar go straight on Dehradun/Rishikesh Road and around 15 kms from Haridwar, take left from Nepali Farm to Dehradun. By taking this route, you will have to tarvel around 15 kms extra but Road is good and wider. As you will cross Purkazi and Roorkee outside office hours, the traffic should be okay. The point of concern is Modinagar. If you cross it without encountering traffic snarls, including half and hours break one should be in Doon in 6 to 6 & 1/2 hours.

Happy journey

When my husband & I arrived and were driven up to DDN, we were nearly 10 hours on the road - very few stops, none totalling more than 1/2 an hour. The traffic was dreadful -- and I can't say what route we took. I was too busy with my culture shock.
