routes

If you have 2 days time and like mountain travel, take the road route from Dhikala to Joshimath via Ranikhet, Kausani, Baijnath, Gwaldam and Karan Prayag. Do it in 2 days for best views of the snow mountains. If you have your own vehicle, you can go by an alternative route in 1 day but it will be tiring and less picturesque.

Thanks. I most likely will do it in a day, as I need to get to auli that day itself.

Do you have any idea how long the shortest trip from corbett to auli would take...maybe 7hours or so?

Thumbs up Hi

The other shorter route I think is through the pauri route.
From Mohan gate, corbett take the left road through marchula- maulekhal-dondiyal-ratkhal-manila- -- JAINAL---mansi--chaukhutia- mehalchauri---GARSAIN---dewalkhal--darkot--SIMLI----KARNAPRAYAG ( ONWARD JOURNEY IS STRAIGHT ) ---NADAPRAYAG--CHAMOLI--PIPALKOTI--gulabkoti-helang-selan -JOSHIMATH--AULI

You can reach JAINAL through the RAnikhet road from the MOHAN gate---Take the right ranikhet road via KUMARIA upto BHATRONJKHAN and then leave the ranikhet route and turn left for JAINAL via bhikiyasaini. This road is better and advisable than the MARCHULA one.

( NOTE- Be carefull not to take the left diversion at DEWARPANI which is just 4kms before BHATRONJKHAN and also goes to JAINAL -this road is narrow and bad.)

If you are self driving arrange for a UTTARANCHAL ROAD MAP either from Survey of India or Nest & WINGS ( if you are from Delhi -both available in COnnaught Place book stores.)
I have self driven thrice and seen all the routes-last one being june 2005.
Best of luck and happy driving.

this is the one day trip route, but you have to start very early (4am) and drive till late in the evening (7-8pm). The roads are safe here so that won't be a problem.

I can suggest you that, drive from corbett to joshimath a nice town with all facilities, you can stay that day in joshimath, becuse if you drive atleast 4 or 5 at morning from corbet, you will be around 4:30 to 5:30 in joshimath, depend on road condition. you can took a drive from corbet to chaukhitiya then to gwaldam and then to karnprayg, till karanprayag you will get little bit problem, but if you hire a car it will be benefit for you, while relaxing on the way and then a nice view of mountain, villages and huge dense forest etc.. which falls on this trip.

This trip is excellent as i hve been many times. Next there is only one possibilty to go to auli that is cable car which start early morning at 8:30 from joshimath and last trip is at 4:30 at evening, so you can't be at right time to catch the cable car, the condition of road during jan...till march is not so good, not easy to drive and fully packed with snow. so better to stay in hotel in joshimath and next day can get early morning to auli.

Hve a great journey !!

ramnagar has some cheap hotels Rs 250-500 not so clean.
The resorts are in dhikuli ( in the reserve forest area) which are Rs 1500-3000 range (off-season).
Kumaon mandal has got a tented accomodation in dhikuli -HOLIDAY CAMP-
They charge Rs 250/bed without food and Rs 550/bed with brkfst&dinr, but in winter it is quite cold in the tents.
If you just want to halt for overnight Hotel ANAND (Rs 300), ramnagar main market is OK.
But if you want to stay longer stay in the resorts or in the KMVN TRH inside the park( which you have to book in advance or take a chance for current booking the same day morning at 6am at forest office in Ramnagar)
hope this gives you quite a few options.

Do you think I will need to make advance bookings or can I just turn up there and get lucky??! I've tried booking with KMVN online but the site freezes... we will be arriving at ramnagar at about 5pm...is that too late to get a hotel room?

got late replying ...back from a short eventfull trip of kumaon upto choukri ....

now you don't have to book in advance ..you will easily get a hotel in ramnagar ...

try to reach ramnagar by 6pm. don't be late than that.. tha road between moradabad bypass to ramnagar is very unsafe in the night ..it passes through a jungle ...so be carefull..
