Hello!

I am getting ready to leave for my first trip to India in less than a month. I was finally able to book a train ticket (via Cleartrip), but could only get a wait-listed train ticket for the Dehrudun Shatabdi (6:50 am) train from New Delhi. The days before and after are all wait listed as well. Should I instead book a flight from New Delhi to Dehrudun?

thanks for the advice!

Kara

If you have time in Delhi before leaving for DehraDun you could look at the possibility of getting a Foreign Tourist Quota ticket for the train.

It has an allocation of 2 Exec Seats and 6 Chair Car seats each day.

In that case it's a no go. The International Bureau is at NDLS station on the upper level. It is open 08.00 to 20.00 Monday - Sat and 08.00 - 14.00 Sundays.

Take an overnight bus to Rishikesh. There are several buses, you can buy a ticket any time from a travel agent (usually for the same night; no need to reserve in advance), you get on in Delhi in the evening and by early next morning, you are in Rishikesh. Cheap and simple. Just be careful that they do not overcharge you for the ticket (not sure about the going rate, but it should not be more than say about 500 rupees per person). If it is a 'deluxe' air conditioned bus, make sure you have a warm blanket and / or warm clothes, otherwise you are going to freeze to death!

Hmmm, a question:
How long are you planning to be in India?

I am asking whether you are in a hurry to not lose a day or two in Delhi, to get acclimatised and a bit over the culture-shock of your first days in India. If you come only for a brief visit, then the plane to Dehradun, and then a car to Rishikesh is the better option indeed. If you do have a bit more time, do spend a day or two in Delhi, before you proceed to Haridwar and then Rishikesh.

Hmmm, the bus, I don't know if you are ready for that after your loooong flight, to right away plunge into a difficult experience, that can potenitially ruin your whole trip (if it is short), like by catching a cold, or getting duped by a tout.

Also, what is your waitlist number on your ticket?

Is that AC Chair Car? Does 2S show availability for the same date? When are you planning to travel?

I guess I did not see the big picture... First time in India etc. I guess the bus - at least on the first night - is not such a good option then. But neither is, in my view, the train, even if you could get a ticket.

If I were you, I would definitely spend a few days in Delhi (time permitting) to get used to things a little bit. If this is only a short visit, the best option would probably be flight + car. If you have more time, I still think you could consider bus instead of train, but only after at least a day or two spent in Delhi. I guess buses leave from several places towards Rishikesh. You can get one for example from Paharganj, any of the travel agents there can sell you a ticket and tell you where the bus will leave from. But there are realistic chances to be ripped off and / or catching a cold (latter can be prevented by using a blanket, and as for being ripped off; if this is your first time in India, you might well get ripped off several times before or after getting to Rishikesh too.)

If this is a vote, I'm for taking the plane to DED and then pre-paid taxi to Rishikesh.

There is still a chance that the WL will get confirmed, although noone can guarantee that. I presume you booked to Haridwar and not Dehradun - the latter is further from Rishikesh.

The flight is not a bad option either, if you don't mind the extra cost. Dehradun airport is a lot closer to Rishikesh than it is to Dehradun.

There are deluxe buses, both a/c and non-a/c, next morning to Rishikesh. Also a 'Volvo' to Haridwar, which costs more than the other two. No advance bookings required generally, get to the bus station 1 hour before.

You have to find your way to Anand Vihar bus station. It's across town from the airport.

No 2S on the Shatabdi. That's the Jan Shatabdi in the afternoon you're thinking about.
