Hi everyone,
Rishikesh sounds like a very tempting place to visit. How long does it take for a driver to take you there from Delhi? How much does this journey cost? Also, how long would you want to stay there for?
Cheers,
Rachel and Mike

Greetings. The easiest and quickest way to get to Rishikesh from Delhi is definately the early morning speedy train from Delhi, called the "Shatabdi Express"..This type `of train service is offered to many destinations around North India, for example, Delhi-Jaipur..You get a nice cozy chair seat..Price,hmmm, i forget exactly-but it will be LESS then renting a car and driver..The Shatabdi servie is a bit more expensive then other train services, relatively speaking, but it gets the job done quickly and painlessly. The journey by train would be about 4-1/2 hours, getting you there about11a.m, as the Shatabdi lives early morn......If ya take a car and driver, this would add a few hours to the journey, 2-3 hours extra.......(6-7 hours)....
How long to stay in Rishikesh.?..Well, it's all relative..Some travelers may stay only a few days and then continue thier travels( -perhaps take the long overnight train to Varansi), some people may quickly want to move on to higher Mountain areas in the region and do some serious trekking and vist Hindu pilgrimage sights(like Gangotri, Badrinath, etc), OR, some folks may stay a lifetime............

if you do choose to take the train as suggested by Bonnie the details needed to book the train tickets are as follows:-

train number 2017, new delhi - dehradun shatabdi express

departs new delhi at 07:00, arrives haridwar at 11:22.

costs Rs460 in air-conditioned chair car.

from haridwar there are regular buses departing for the one hour journey to rishikesh.

The two posters before me gave helpful info about the trains, and I agree with them that this is the best (safest, cheapest) way to reach Rishikesh.

The OP did ask about driving to Rishikesh, and this is perfectly possible. I've used Rishikesh as a base for my last day in India, taking a taxi to the airport directly. IGIA is the right side of Delhi, so you don't have to go through the centre of the city at all. It would be possible to do it the opposite direction (IGIA to Rishikesh), although I wouldn't advise such a thing if you had come straight off an international flight (you'd pay a fortune, for a start).

The trip by taxi takes around five/six hours (depends on the traffic and road conditions - alllow a bigger margin if you're going in to catch a flight) and costs about Rs.900, depending on your bargaining skills.

I've had a week there and found plenty to do (eating in the many restaurants, walking in the "jungle" on the other side of the river, attending the aarti down at Triveni Ghat by the Ganga), but two or three days is plenty if you're pushed for time. The area across the river known as Swarg Ashram has quieter and nicer accomodation options than the centre of town.

Hi Rachel,
Since u are thinking of Rishikesh,I would suggest u to visit SIALSOR a beautiful place surrounded by lofty mountains and lush green meadows, and the River Mandakini quietly flowing on one side. I visited it last summer .It would be a few hours drive from Rishikesh . The "Tourist Village" of Garhwal Mandal is the place to stay in.I am sure everyone would love the pollution free tranquil atmosphere of SIALSORE.If u decide to go for it and need more information just email me a line.

Happy Journey!

Delhi to Rishikesh

I'm going to be visiting Rishikesh in November. I'm arriving in Delhi from Jodhpur in the evening. Anyone know a good way to get to Rishikesh? I suppose hiring a driver or taxi to take me there. How much does this costs or does anyone have reccommendations for a reasonable priced driver to take me from Delhi to Rishikesh? Any info would help. Thanks!

Delhi to Rishikesh

Hi,
my flight's landing on Delhi will be at 10,30 PM, after an 18 hours travel from Italy, and after I have to go to Rishikesh. What to do? go immediatlely by bus or taxi to the Old Train Station and wait for the first train to Haridwar? Is there any bus leaving to Rishikesh in the night? Better to wait in a Hotel (which one?) and leave the day after?
Any advice will be appreciated... thanks

I would take the morning Shatabdi train.
Get a taxi to a cheap hotel in Pahargang and shower, then train it.
A taxi is a bad, expensive idea and buses are in my opinion lame after a long flight.
One of the Star hotels is cheap and clean enough for a few hours

You don't really have time to follow the advice above if you want to get any sleep. If your scheduled arrival is 10:30pm, it will be 1:30am or later (probably later) before you get to a hotel, and the Shatabdi leaves from New Delhi station at 7am. It's also too late to catch a night bus. This is India and you cannot do everything so quickly; stay in Delhi and take it easy.

If you're really in a hurry you can take the Janshatabdi, which leaves at 3pm (get off at Haridwar maybe 7:30p).

Delhi to Rishikesh

Can anyone help please - I'd like to go to Rishikesh tomorrow but not sure how/how much. Should I get a bus from Kashmiri Gate? Do you know how frequent the buses are and where's a good place to stay when I arrive?

Thank you!

You should take a bus from the Inter-state Bus Terminal (ISBT; or Kashmiri Gate) for Rishikesh. Uttarakhand State Transport buses run frequently (one per hour from early morning till late night) but DST buses are also available. Buses till Haridwar are okay too; Rishikesh is just an hour away from Haridwar and any autorickshaw can take you there. Also note that buses for Dehradun will also take you to Haridwar. IIRC a bus from Delhi to Rishikesh takes around five hours.

A good place to stay in Rishikesh is Hotel Divya, which is located in the Lakshmanjhula area. It is managed by a helpful gentleman and is reasonably priced. To reach there you will have to cross the Lakshmanjhula bridge and turn to your right (away from the multi-storey temple) and ask any person. I can't give there phone number right away unfortunately, but you will find it, for example, in the Lonely Planet India guide.

Hope this helps.
Girish.
