Delhi to Rishikesh by taxi?

Instead of using the train, we are two people and thinking of going
to Rishikesh by taxi.

What would a reasonable price for a Delhi - Rishikesh taxi ride be?

Is there any special long distance counter in or around the New Delhi train station, where I can book the taxi?

Any ideas on how long it would take to reach Rishikesh?

Thanks for any input.

You would have to pay the Taxi's return fare as well, likely to be 4,000 Rs or something - whereas there are also regular a/c coaches to Haridwar/maybe Rishi for about Rs.200 p.person from ISBT

Train is more comfortable for this journey, the bus would be my next choice and If I want to throw away my money then I would take a taxi. And the cost is going to be in the region that Palefac mentioned, driving time from Delhi 6-7 hours depending upon the traffic conditions.

What are the bus options like for the same journey (I'll be making next year during Kumbha Mela) Deluxe busses, are they really comfortable and worth it?

I'm coming up with a back-up plan in case I don't get those train tickets on the shatabdi.

Bus options are plenty and comfortable, there are a variety of buses including Delux and AC buses, the AC buses are excellent. You can get a bus from ISBT Kashmiri Gate, they leave practically ever ten or so mintues till late in the night.

Also, there are trains other than Shatabdi. My parents who live in Haridwar are suggesting a train that starts around the same time as Jan Shatabdi (mid afternoon) as more comfortable (and with more luggage space). For the overnight travel, Mussourie Express is quite good.

Same as LIH, I have a strong preference for trains. If not, I'd opt for the bus - and not to save money but the stress.

The buses are not exactly like the US Greyhounds, still comfortable on the austere side, and the a/c works is the thing isn't it?

You've got that right!

Thanks for the replies, I hadn't thought about trying out the other trains if the Shatabdi was full. I'm going over Shivaratri, just to maximize my travel challenges!

I booked a taxi to Rishi across from the train station on Monday night. The shabati was sold out and I didn't want to wait or mess around as I had my bicycle boxed up with me. The driver from the airport told me 3000 was a good price. When I tried to book the taxi the guy took me up to his office and wrote down 3 prices on a piece of paper: 8800, 7700, and 6600. He suggested I take the 7700 one. I may be a bumpkin but I still know a slick sales pitch when I see it. I told him that I could not afford that and that I wanted to pay no more than 3000. He laughed and said no way. I said OK and started to leave. He let me at first but when I actually got going down the stairs he called me back, made a call and told me a taxi would be there in 10 minutes. I reluctantly paid 1000 up front and the rest when we got there.

I think the taxi driver got a little lost in Haridwar, we seemed to go in circles for a bit, but made the trip in 7 hours, from midnight to 7am.

Thanks for all the inputs so far.

Two more questions come up:

-Where exactly is the place opposite the New Delhi Train Station
Tenletters has booked his 3,000.- taxi trip?

-Is there enough leg space in the buses for someone with long legs
and a height of 6'2 (186cm)

Thanks again.
