Delhi to Joshimath via Lansdowne/Pauri
Hi,
We are planning to visit the valley of flowers in the first week of august. To get to Joshimath there one option is to travel via rishikesh, and seems that another option is to take the kotdwar-pauri route. These rotues meet at srinagar.
Is is ok to take the pauri route while going? Also, we want to spread the journey from delhi to joshimath over 2 days. What would be the ideal place to break the journey at - will it be lansdowne, or srinagar, or rudraprayag, or any other one.....?
Regards,
Ashish

If you are going to break just for sleeping, then any of these places is fine. Lansdowne and Pauri may not have lot of staying options because of they being away from main pilgrim route. If you are taking public transport then better stay at Srinagar/Rudraprayag because catcing a bus towards Joshimath is easier there.
I would prefer to go via Lansdowne and Pauri because I will get to see new sights, less traffic, less diesel fumes. The ascent from Kotdwar to Lansdowne is very good.

Are the distances comparable? (Haven't been to Joshimath via Pauri)
Hi Roopesh,
Thanks for ur reply....we are planning to book a taxi for the round trip to/from delhi, so we will not be using public transport. The hault is more for rest, but wouldn't mind the place being scenic
Are the roads on pauri route good?
Capt Mahajan: - yes, the distances are very much comparable. The pauri route is approx 40 kms shorter, but i've heard it is more hilly so takes approx the same time or an hr longer maybe

Altho the hill-section of NH 119 is in very good condition, the terrain is such that the extra distance wud require around 30 mins extra driving time.
Certainly worth it for the scenery and lower traffic.
(Note to all: This is not via Lansdowne. To go via Lansdowne, add another 15 km)
Aps and Dilliwala, thanks.
Another item on my list, then.

Hi,
I will be going to Tungnath this week-end. I am planning to go via Kotdwara. Mussorie express reaches Kotdwara at 5:30 AM.
Will I be able to get any transport to Rudraprayag at that time? What are my options? If I want to hire a cab, can I do that at Kotdwara and how much will be expense (say for a Qualis/Tavera)?
TIA
Nitin

You shud be able to get something direct to Rudraprayag that early, otherwise jump into the first thing that moves to Shrinagar or Pauri and change.
For cabs, I can't tell youi exactly what vehicle-type, but figure with Rs. 10-12 per km.

Thanx Dilliwala. Will I get can/bus outside the station only, or will I have to go somewhere. We are going there with two other families, that makes us 6 adults and 3 young kids (5,4 and 1). And I am the one chosen to organize the trip, I would hate to screw up anything, that's why a bit worried :-(
Thanx
Nitin
Nitin, the bus depot at Kotdwara is right outside/adjacent to the RS. I don't recall if jeeps also leave from there, but you shud be able to find that out easily before leaving the RS. In any case, the main highway is a short walk from the RS, in case you have to go there to catch a passing jeep. A private cab you shud be able to organise from outside the RS as well.
What you save on the route via Pauri is the stretch from Rishikesh to Srinagar. Incidentally, you don't go through Lansdowne but take left at a fork some 15-20 km before Lansdowne. The leg from a little after Byasi to Devprayag is in terrible shape in the rains and prone to landslides. You'll be cutting this out.

Hi Dilliwala,
I have been tracking your posts in IM for some time now and i am really impressed by your knowledge of the hills and the routes.
It is, however time for me to tap into that bank of knowledge.
I will be riding to Rudraprayag (Kartik Swamy Temple, to be precise. I have two routes in mind, one via haridwar and rishikesh and the other via kotdwar and Pauri. I have never travelled in this stretch before , but which road would be better in your opinion? See, i am definitely not looking for the shortest route. What i am looking for is a less crowded, scenic route.
Also, if i start around 9 in the morning (office work needs to be wrapped up overnight) would it be possible to reach the temple by evening?
I tried to IM you, but they said that you are out of inbox page. So had to post here.
