Delhi to Almora

What is the best way to reach Almora from Delhi? I am supposed to arrive at Delhi airport from N America.I heard there is a train overnight and I found out there is plane to some other city that is about 3 hours taxi driving from Almora or get a driver all the way from Delhi to Almora? this is my first trip to India and I do not have any experience so any advice or suggestion would be helpful.

The best way is to take train to Kathgodam and then a taxi to Almora. There are two trains, Ranikhet express that starts from old Delhi station at 10:45 PM, and reaches Kathgodam at 6 AM, and day train from Anand Vihar to Kathgodam (Train No. 14012). It departs from Anand Vihar Terminal at 6.00 AM and arrives at Kathgodam at 11.55 AM. You will get the taxi easily from there and the fare will be approximately 1400 Rs.
Sometimes, the joy that the Daybreak brings, is unparalleled!

what time does your flight get in from US. Mostly these flight come to India late night in which case you will miss the overnight train and even the morning one will be a tiring journey straight on the back of a 20+ hr flight. May be one option is to saty in delhi that night and take the O/n train next day

Thank you everyone for replies. My airplane arrives little bit after midnight and I think its good idea to spend night and maybe day in Delhi and than catch one of the train. One more questions please: do I have to buy train ticket in advance or I can buy same day of travel?
Thanks again

thanks for info. I guess it is not big of a deal to find transport from airport to some hotel in the middle of the night. I will be by myself (50 years old female). Is it ok if I take some taxi from airport or it is better idea to get some hotel that will arrange pick up from airport?

hi dear, try this link for online hotel booking www.btfhonline.com Safe and centrally located hotel run by YWCA OF DELHI. You can take a prepaid taxi from the airport to center of the city and it should not cost you more than 300 bucks even in the middle of the night. If you take a private taxi, that will be too expensive.

You can also book your train tickets using these third party travel websites aswell and its pretty simple.

http://www.yatra.com/trains.html?s=n (Accepts Amex cards)

http://www.cleartrip.com/trains

Also, you can take a pre-paid taxi (non A/C) from airport or Prepaid Easycabs (A/C) taxi from airport.

Cheers!
