Chaukori visit in dec Hi Friends, I am Meghal from Mumbai, I am planning a trip to Nainital & Chaukori in DEc( 20th to 25th) with my wife & 6year old son wanted some information about the region. 1) My son wants to see and touch Snow will I surely get that in Chaukori or will I have to travle to Munsyari ? is there any other place around nainital where i will surely get snow ? 2) How do I travel from Nainital to Chaukori ? Are the Taxis or private cars safe ? What is the approx distance & travel time. I would appreciate if I can get some help on this. Thanks

Snow in December at Chaukori or around Nainital is rare. Munsiyari might have it, but not surely. You can take shared jeeps or buses to go to Chaukori from Nainital. Alternatively you can hire a cab also. Total distance is around 175 Kms and will take around 5 Hours.

If you book the cab for your entire trip then a car will charge you around Rs.1100-1200 per day. Shared Jeep/Bus will cost you around Rs.125-150 for each traveller. If you book a cab to drop you at Chaukori then the charge would be around Rs.2200-2500.

Snow in auli is possible, but can not guarantee. Nainital to Auli will be around 280 Kms and will take around 8 Hours. If you are more keen on snow then I would suggest to try Manali instead. Higher reaches of Manali will have snow defenitely.

| what about mcleodganj IS it possible to see snow in Mcleodganj in December ? or probably Triund.. I would like to avoid manali, kullu, simla, nainital,mu ssorie and all those frequenctly visited places... All I need is a good accesible place filled with snow and probably a 1 or 2 day treks to get excellent views.. I was under the impression that Chaukori will have excellent snow during december end. The route is Take a car/bus/jeep to Kathgodam and take the Kathgodam - Dehradun express till Haridwar. From Haridwar Bus Stand, which is just opposite Rly. Stn. take a direct bus to Dharamshala. Once in Dharamshala take a shared taxi/bus to Mcleodganj... and take the trek.... If you would re-check, my post was is responce to post#8 which what about Mcleodganj..... ![]() | |

Wild Hwy delhiwalla.. that was way wild.. In my opinion ..after spending hours in fishing out photos of different places like chaukori, chopta, ilaka, triund,m ussourie, dhanaulti etc in picasaweb.. Chopta seeems to be the best place for guaranted snow in december end..Even if chopta fails...3 km trek to tunganath..will guarantee plenty of snow..I guess.. The other best and easy option is to go Auli and trek to Gorson bugyal (again 3 to 4kms ).. Triund and Ilaka near Mcclo is fine, but u gotta trek 10 kms.. Looks like chopta and Auli are best 'base points' for guaranteed snow in december end.. Sriram.B

Hi this is Meghal again. I have decided to finalise my plan to visit Kumaon during Dec & the Itenerary is as mentioned below, please suggest if I should make any changes. We are 2 couples & 2 kids travelling in an Innova from Delhi. 23rd Dec Delhi to Nainital - shld be abt 8 hrs drive so will reach at night since we are leaving at abt 12 noon. 24th & 25th in nainital. Leave for Chaukori on the 26th I think the distance is abt 160kms and shld take me abt 5hrs. 26th & 27th in Chaukori. Leave for Corbett on 28th in the afternoon. I am not aware of the route but since Chaukori to Nainital is 160kms & Nainital to Corbett is abt 65kms so Chaukori Corbet shld be abt 220 & will take me atleast 7hrs. 29th in Corbett. Leave for delhi on the 30th & take train back to Mumbai. This forum has really helped me & all the information that I have gathered is from the various threads written by the avid travellers who have posted their threads.Hope to receive a feedback on the same. Thanks
