Can we visit Gangotri in mid August?

hi,
We 4-5 friends are planning to travel to Gangotri/Gaumukh from 12 to 15th August. Have couple of queries

1. Is it a good time to be there. I hv heard that its a rainy season and landslide prone time and hence not a good time to trek - to Gaumukh, Tapovan etc... - if its not suitable then we will have to think of Valley of Flowers area.

2. What are the places around Gangotri/Valley of Flowers area which we can cover in 4 days. We are staying in delhi and i think it will take at least 12 hours to reach both the places.

Thanks
ks

Amidst rains is perfectly fine, but what about the risk factor caused by landslides.....

Gangotri - Gaumukh Trek in Mid August 2010

dear IMers,

Since i had planned mainly for Valley of flowers during august this year to visit gharwal, but my worries are increasing whether it would be possible or too hectic to trek in august from gangotri to gaumukh, some one please throw some light on this less discussed topic and so that i would plan number of days whether to include gangotri - gaumukh or not...

thanks in advance pals!

Well most people visit VoF in August , so be prepared for the rains and there should not be major problems during the trek. Landslide typically upset road traffic and therefore you should ave reserve days in your plan. Chances of landslides around the trek paths are lower as the mountains have not been disturbed too much in making these paths whereas along the roads the constant widening by blasting the mountains leads to more landslides.

Both VoF and Gaumukh are well laid tracks and I wouldnt worry too much about rains.

If I have to chose a trek in August it would be VoF as the flowers are good at that time. Monsoon is not a good season for Gaumukh as the skies are covered with clouds and one is not able to sight the peaks ...

For Gaumukh / Tapovan try late sept early oct

the rangers close entry to VOF if land slides inside the restricted area

but then you have to take that chance
triyund, tungnathji, valley of flowers
