Bombay to Nainital

Hello everybody,

I am planning a trip to Nainital, Ranikhet and Jim Corbet with a few friends... I stay in Bombay and I am really confused as to how to go directly from Bombay to one of these places. All information that I have found is Bombay to Delhi and then buses or trains from Delhi to these places.. Is there any train which goes directly to these places or closer, other than Delhi?

I also want to then go to Amritsar after this trip of three places.. I prefer not stopping at Delhi and would like some other spot in between which is more of a tourist attraction than Delhi.

Really need help. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

just browse thru the following threads....and you will have the full idea:

Escape to Kumaon

travel to uttaranchal

Nainital, Honeymoon Trip in week 4, February, 2009

Nainital trip

Ranikhet express will take you to Kathgodam from Delhi. Kathgodam happens to be the rail-head of this area. You have the option of hiring a vehicle from here or Haldwani( one station prior) for your entire trip, closing back at Kathgodam......where from you can travel back to Delhi and onwards to Amritsar..................or you can hire vehicle for part-journey basis, that is.....book vhcl from KG upto Nainital. Then again book a seperate vehicle for Ranikhet....and so on.

By the way.....for Corbett visit, you have two options-:
1. book and stay at Dhikala, inside the Corbett NP.....
2. Stay at Ramnagar....visit Corbett and come back all the way to Kathgodam to catch the return train to Delhi.

You can cover this Corbett-leg first and then from there go to Nainital/ Ranikhet.

Alternately, you can go to Nainital/ Ranikhet first and come back to Corbett/ Ramnagar(C/R).

If you are coming back to C/R from Ranikhet, you will be coming via Bhimtaal- Bhowali-Kathgodam-Haldwani...................... ...again, if you are coming back to C/R from Nainital, you shall have the option of coming down by the Haldwani route or you can also use the Kaladhungi route ( more scenic, but steeper).

Either way you shall be reaching Ramnagar....and onwards to Corbett( Dhikala).

All the best!

Hi Randeep
You can board Mumbai rajdhani from Mumbai Central at 4:30pm ,which reaches New Delhi station at 8:30 in the morning. From New Delhi station you have to go to Anand Vihar bus station to get a bus to Haldwani/Nanital.
There are number of buses plying between Delhi and Haldwani..
Delhi to Haldwani by bus is nearlly 8hrs journey...

From haldwani you can either go to Nainital(40kms)or Jim Corbett park.
fare : Mumbai to New Delhi by Rajdhani (3rd tier AC) 1500Rs(one side )

Delhi to Haldwani by bus 300AC ,normal bus 160rs...

One more question:

Till what time in the night are buses available from Delhi to Jim Corbet/Ramnagar? I plan to visit Corbet first and then head to Nainital.

Well, if you are prepared for a journey of over 46 hours, including waiting for a connecting train at Bareilly for 8.5 hours, you can easily get to Ramnagar and also avoid Delhi. Ok, not so easily - there's a once-weekly train from Lokmanya Tilak to Bareilly on Mondays, the 4313 Bareilly Express.
You cud do it in 34 hours by getting off at Chandausi and going to Ramnagar by road. But then you'd have to stay the night there, becos it wud be too late to get the paperwork done at the Park office same day. I.e. with either option you can only reach the park around noon on Wednesday.

Other than that, coming from the south the nearest point from where you can catch a train to Kumaon is Delhi. The quickest option gets you to Ramnagar in 27 hours - 2953 August Kranti Express to Nizamuddin, then the 5036 Uttaranchal SK Exp. to Ramnagar. But you'd have to stay the night in Ramnagar. So again - leave Mumbai on Monday, enter park around noon Wednesday.
Then there's the option of the 2903 Golden Temple Mail from BCT to Nizamuddin, to connect onto the 5013A Corbett Link Express from DLI to Ramnagar. 31.5 hours on trains, but considering the paperwork to be done at Ramnagar, this is actually the shortest travel time from Mumbai into Corbett Park.

The good news is that on your return you can get a train from Kathgodam to as far as Jalandhar Cantt (so long as it's a Tuesday ), from where it's a short hop of around 80 km to Amritsar - just take the first train passing or a bus.
On other days, you can take a very slow passenger train to Moradabad, to connect onto the Amritsar Express at 22.25; or take a bus to Rampur or Moradabad, giving you a greater choice of trains to Amritsar.

Any other train combo requires 3 trains or coming to Delhi first.

That second option is lousy actually. Wud require leaving Ramnagar at such a time (in a hired car) as to be at one of the entry gates before 6 am, in order to be able to get a day-visit - first-come first-served and it's always a dog-fight. Better to stay inside the park.

......and come back all the way to Kathgodam to catch the return train to Delhi.

Not necessary - both the DLI-KGM trains have slip-routes to/from Ramnagar.

Hmm, bit of a long route isn't it - why not just follow the Ranikhet-Bhatronjkhan road down to Dhangari?
