I'm planning to do a solo trip to Badrinath, Devaprayag, Joshimath Kedarnath, Sitapur, Varanasi and Muktinath in a two week period. 27 year old male in good health with some basic experience hiking. I want to do most of the trip in state buses and preferably at night where it is not hilly .

I want to learn practical issues that will concern my itinerary, since it looks a little too ambitious. My plan is to start in second week of Sept from Mathura. Most of my stay will be in temple towns.

Q1: How hard is to get acco in the places below?
Q2: How easy and frequent are the buses in the routes below?
Q3: What are the stuff you are expected to take in such a trip?

Day 1:Take a bus to Haridwar from Mathura.
Day 2: Haridwar to Gaurikund by bus.
Day 3: Gaurikund to Kedarnath by trek.
Day 4: Kedarnath to Gaurikund and bus to Devaprayag.
Day 5. Devaprayag to Badrinath.
Day 6: Badrinath to Rishikesh.
Day 7: Rishikesh to Sitapur.
Day 8: Sitapur to Varanasi.
Day 9: Varansi to Lumbini.
Day 10: Lumbini to Pokhara.
Day 11 - 13. hike to Muktinath and back (partly through flight to Jomsom)

Not sure if you will get a bus from Mathura to Hardwar.
Why are you returning to Deoprayag, that means you are coming back. You must cover Deoprayag on the way to Gaurikund and on return from Kedarnath, stop over at Rudraprayag.
The best way to travel in UK is to to take the GMVN tours or shared taxis. I have not seen too many UKSRTC buses on these routes.
Hotels - no problem, arrive and take up rooms. GMVN is the best bet in all places. Now that the season has almost ended, there should be no problems with getting acco except during Dussehra and Diwali times.

You will not get night buses on any of these routes since after 8 pm roads are closed towards Badri and Kedar.

Thanks Kumar. I will look into the Mathura-Hardwar leg, but since these two are big towns in that region, Im hoping to find a means possibly through train/bus.

2. Looking at Google maps I assumed that Devprayag is in the Badri route. IF it is in kedar route, then i shud probably make that adjustment. Is it possible to go to Badrinath from Gaurikund starting at noon?

Regarding GVKM, do they just get you from point A to point B, or do they run a kind of package tour? Ideally, I would like to retain as much flexibility as I can in the trip, but if packaged tour is the only alternative I guess I have to go with that.

Route is Hardwar-Rishikesh-Deoprayag-Rudraprayag-Ukhimath-Gaurikund-Kedarnath-Gaurikund-Ukhimath-Rudraprayag-Joshimath-Badrinath.

Deprayag comes first and you have to return to Rudraprayag to continue the journey to Badrinath. You can also take the route from Ukhimath directly to Chamoli for Badri, that is shorter, via Tungnath.

I doubt if a noon bus from Gaurikund will be able to reach Badrinath the same day because:
- time taken
- the last gate at Joshimath closes at 430 pm, and reopens only the next morning

So the most likely possibility is that you will end up staying overnight at Joshimath.

The maximum flexibility you will get is by taking shared taxis that ply all over - may not be comfortable, but you can hop in and out.

balaji,
it's no problem to get around with public transport in UA, just that it needs more time than cars/taxis. Don't bother with GMVN tours, they're a rip-off and you're right about the lack of flexibility.

UPSRTC website shows a daily bus at noon Mathura-Haridwar-Rishikesh (originating in Agra) so that's convenient. But you should reconfirm this in Mathura.
http://www.upsrtc.com/online/query/o...query.asp?ch=1

There are also various trains between Mathura Jctn and Haridwar, but evening onwards.

There's a daily bus from Gauri Kund to Badrinath going the shorter route via Chopta/Gopeshwar (avoiding Rudraprayag), but it leaves at 5.30 am. You really should plan to be on this bus, because otherwise you'll have to go hopping with jeep/bus which will take a lot more time. Another benefit of this bus is that in case it's late and misses the 4.30 pm gate at Joshimath, it's still let through.
