Trip to Auli
Hi,
I'm planning on going to Auli on or around March 18th. I'm planning on taking the train from Delhi to Dehradun, and then a bus from there to Joshimath. Wouldn't mind travelling with another foreigner at least to Auli as I would feel a bit safer then. Actually, does anyone know? How safe is it to travel alone on the train/bus? Is it dangerous or am I pretty safe if I take precausions? Thanks, Mike |

Its perfectly safe.
Just browse through this site for pointers and the usual precautions; you will be fine. You do know that you don't have to go to Dehradun to go to Auli, don't you? Unless you want to go there anyway.

I would go straight to auli from delhi, but is there a bus that leaves to joshimath after 20:00....because it looks like my flight would come in around 17:30. That's the reason I would do the train to dehradun as I could take the train at 10:30 at night.
Let me know, also, I'd love to hear other peoples experiences on their trip to Auli. Thanks |

Oh, and does me being an American make any difference with safety. I'm living in South Korea right now, but am an American.

M - This is perfectly safe for everyone, even an American
![]() I am not sure if I'd opt for a night bus after a long flight anyway - so you are indeed better off with the train. You could also consider staying the night not too far from the New Delhi train station and take the morning train (Shatabdi) to Haridwar / Dehradoon. But that's a matter of preference. I am quite certain that buses to Joshimath also go from Haridwar, so you need not go all the way to Dehradoon. You may wish to enquire - as it might save you some time. (I am not however an expert, so others might have a better idea.) Haven't been to Auli. Was in Joshimath a long time ago - so can't be specific. In any case, it should be very nice. Good luck! |

Auli in March
Hi,
I'm hoping to go to Auli in March. Around the 17th. Is there still going to be substantial snow there for me to ski? I was hoping to stay at the clifftop club resort. Do you know anything about it? Is it a good place to stay? Can you go to town if you want? Thanks, Mike |

Hi,
this year the snow was minimal so i dont think there would be any snow left in auli on 17th march, clifftop club is a great place to stay though rather pricey, you can always comedown to joshimath which is a few kilometres away and has a decent market. |

Hi
I went to Auli five years ago, by motorbike from Rishikesh. It's a great place - just wish I'd made the time to do the trek into the Valley of Flowers near there. I stayed at the state run Ski Lodge there - it was quite basic but ok for a few nights. The general area came across as very relaxed and quite safe. There were very few westerners around up there, compared to the masses in Rishikesh. If your itinery is a little more relaxed, then you could allways stop for a few days, or a week or so in Rishikesh and persuade other travellers to join you on a mission to Auli, or find share a taxi there to enjoy the truely awesome drive. Enjoy, Matt |

I agree with kmalik. But on second thoughts, you can take the night train (Mussorie Express)from Old Delhi Station that leaves at around 10:15 pm and reaches Haridwar the next morning, around 6:00 am (reaches Dehradun at 9:00am). From here, you can get a direct bus to Joshimath but I would suggest you spend one day at Rhishikesh ... it's worth it. There's a local bus from here to Joshimath at 3:00 am which is very convenient as it reaches Joshimath at around 5:00 pm. There are many good hotels here or you could go straight up to Auli - either by cab or the ropeway. The last ropeway up is 5:30pm and its possible that the bus may not be on time. Anyways, this is more or less a good schedule as I had done it in 2004.
Travelling alone is India isn't such a big thing and people up North are more friendly than in the big cities. Just see that your passport, money and papers are safely tucked away. |
