A better and safer way is to take the bus. I would not trust a shared taxi, specially if I were white and travelling on my own into the badlands of Easter UP. The bus I believe is cheaper than the shared taxi.

Thanks for your suggestions guys. As it turned out, I thought of going by a bus but then found that there is no AC bus going towards Bahraich and I did not fancy traveling in one of the UP state transport rattletraps. So I took a non-AC taxi that cost me Rs 4.50 per kilometer and made it to and from Sravasti. In hindsight, it was probably a good decision as it rained a lot, the road is fairly beat up and the places in Sravasti are fairly widespread and definitely need a a vehicle to go to.

Dear Incog,

How much did you actually pay for the Non A/C Taxi from Lucknow to Sravasti (return)?

I heard that in India they charge both way (to and from) even if you only need to go one way. Is this the norm?

I think it was a little less than 2000 rupees.

Hire a car from Lucknow to Sravasti

I checked with 2-3 car hire companies in Lucknow and their quote for a trip from Lucknow airport to Sravasti (Jetavana Archaeological Park) with a Tavera/Qualis is 4500-5000Rs (all inclusive). Anyone can comment if 5000RS is reasonable or not.

Hi, A tavera or qualis is required only if you have a group of more than 4-5 people. Upto 4 average people can fit into an indica car. The cost being quoted is a bit on the higher side too.
