Thanks for straightening out the record, livingh! Yes, as I said at the outset, I lived here MANY moons ago. ChristChurch brings back memories, I attended thru 8th class there (finished at SFC).

I do go back every few years, so not a complete stranger either. In fact I will be there in November (sorry, no time to meetup, have only a few days in the city).

I particularly remember loving the road from Kaiserbagh to the Globe park area. You could just close your eyes and imagine all those old mahals in their old glory days. Don't tell me they are now high-rise apartments

Rover's, Ranjan's and Christchurch area were regular hangouts for us, coming back from school (LC) would stop over for a burger or an icecream there. There was a Bakery in front of SFC used to sell great biscuits, can still smell the fresh baked biscuits and bread there. Well, I don't recognize the Begum Hazart Mahal Park and Globe park area at all now, Behen Mayawati has completely overhauled the area and what she has made of it, probably even she doesn't know, The old buildings are there, she probably couldn't take them over and demolish them as they are heritage buildings.
Aaah Nostalgia!

Do you mean those structures are no more there? Globe missing (it would not be heritage building, I suppose) or like? I really don't know and it's sad if they are not. The Google map shows these at
http://maps.google.com/maps?t=h&hl=e.... 004823&z=18
The Google Earth informs that the image is as on 21 Mar., 2006.

The bakery must have been after my time. But other things and people come to mind. Choudhry's son was a classmate, so was Wohra's. I imagine those establishments have their best days behind them! My fav in Ganj was the comic shop (upstairs, near Bhagwan Dass) that would exchange comics 1-for-2. Mayfair cinema was the place to see Hollywood flicks.

I did see some of Ms. M's handiwork along the Gomti. Grandiose but seemed a bit vague in its vision. Hey, who knows, it might actually turn out good in the end!

One other suggestion for visitors would be to try and find out from their hotel about good places to sample the famed Avadh cuisine, the kababs and biryani and sweets. Unlike Delhi, where everyone knows the good food joints, Lucknow appears to be far below the radar (probably a good thing!).

Do you mean Hobby Corner? Sunday Morning Shows at Mayfair . Once a week treat , followed by coffee and pastry tray at Kwalities. Fresh macroons still warm fro mteh over were my favourite.

Hobby Corner sounds right. Kwality was an occasional treat, great ice cream and coffee too. There were better places for kababs et al, but I won't mention them as they are probably long gone! Perhaps some more recent visitors have recoms...
