We are also considering a stay-over for the night in Luckmore, just because of how highly Lonely Planet speaks of it's extraordinary fine arts and performing arts. Can someone speak to this?
I also undertsand that The Residency is a great site to see, and that Luckmore was pivotal in India's history. Please, talk about the art in Luckmore. My first degree is in art, and this place spoke to me! Thanks! J |

Might be a good idea to change the thread title, to bring it to the attention of people who know about the arts scene in Lucknow.

(crossposted) Thanks.
Lucknow, and UP, has been very important historically always. The Nawabi culture, a Shiite centre, the story of the annexation of Awadh by the British- all are fascinating. Sadly, a lot of the old culture is dying out. I don't know how much of the performing arts are on regular display now, but the city was the centre of Urdu poetry- and music too. |

See the film called "Umrao Jan."
I couldn't find much art or music in Lucknow, but I didn't search terribly hard. I did find the Residency very moving, and loved the Bara Imambara. The Hotel Gomti took good care of me, and there was a "Chinese" restaurant very nearby that had good (though not terribly authentic) food. Have a nice stay there.

We're trying to figure out if the arts there make it worth a stop between Agra and Varanasi.
Thanks! ![]() |

Lucknow has a great arts collage, a music collage and there are many world class performers who have come out of the place. It is famous for Chikan embroidary, kasidakari and zardozi work. Of course not to forget the food!!

times change and so do people and cities
An overnight stay will hardly suffice to see Lucknow's monuments, sample its cuisine and see its handicrafts. There are dance and music performances held in Lucknow but there is no way of knowing in advance when they will be held-- no calendar of dance recitals etc. The ones that are held in the auditoriums are advertised in the local English newspapers. Most of them are held in the winter months when the weather is cooler and more conducive to art performances.
Also, it was the courtesans who kept alive the tradition of the classical dance KATHAK as well as the court artists patronised by the nawabs. Now the courtesans have faded out and the descendants of the court artists have migrated either to Delhi or Mumbai where there is some patronage of the performing arts. Sorry, no rich people or kings in Lucknow now who could patronise these artists. Hope this helps you to make up your mind. Tulsi

pehle aap!
lucknow - the city of the nawabs!
and of course the legendary lucknowi who were extremely polite and steeped in proper etiquette... the “pehle aap [ after you ]” there was this one story amongst others of one said to the other as they were about to board a train... “pehle aap”, said one, "pehle aap" replied the other, equally polite and proper. the train moved off but the two remained polite and proper, and standing on the platform! and then the kebabs fit for the nawabs... the kebabi culture unfortunately it aint no more the centre of them awesome urdu cultural happenings of classical music / poetry / dance. pick up a couple of chikan kurta's... as livinhimalayas has suggested. :brishti |
