Independence Day in Lucknow

I know it's a little early to be thinking about this, but I need to leave the country in mid-August and wonder if it's worth scheduling around Independence Day.

What type of celebrations are there in Lucknow? Do most folks tend to stay in? Leave for relatives? Are celebrations safe for a lone, female foreigner (e.g., will I risk being caught in a stampede)?

I'm currently thinking of traveling to either Bali or Nepal. Another concern is that travel will be crazy around that time, and I should avoid domestic travel if possible.

Any help you guys have would be great. Thanks!

There is hardly any stampede on Independence day anywhere in India. As you have indicated most people prefer to travel or be with relatives or at home but this time around 15th Aug is a Saturday which does not leave much room for a short break.

Thanks, Gaurav.

Do you know if there are any public celebrations in Lucknow? (I'm from the US, so automatically think of parades...but I realize parades might be a very Western thing.)

How might a lone female celebrate India's Independence Day in India?

Well On Independence day normally there are no Parades. The main function is held at Red Fort,Delhi where Prime Minister will address the nation. Additionally in each of state capitals respective Cheif Ministers would deliver a speech( In Lucknow Cheif Minister would deliver the speech. It would be difficult for you as it would be in Hindi.

The best option is to make friends and socialize a bit.

Bummer! I was hoping to see cows and elephants roaming the streets, see fireworks being lit right under power lines...oh, wait.

Yeah, I have trouble with the socializing bit. It seems like the men here like socializing with me a little too much, if you know what I mean. (Not to bring us back to the "Dying your hair blonde" thread or anything...)

Perhaps I will just wander aimlessly (and in cognito) around Mayawati's kingdom (which happens to be in my 'hood) and soak in all her glory...

Thanks Gaurav - helps to know what I'm getting myself into!
