Haridwar, Allahabad - budget hostels

Hi there,I'm looking for advice on good budget hostels and good places for river dip in these cities- if possible- any tips gratefully received
sorry that should be Allahabad.

Haridwar I just wandered to the edge. The water was colder than ice and so dirty with particulate material that you could have farmed on the river. I took a couple of gallons back to Delhi for the ailing father of my Hindi teacher and was surprised to see so much settle out in time. I overpaid 5 Rupees for a hole in the wall..

Interesting. I think the amount of particulate matter in the Ganges(at least until Rishikesh/Haridwar) changes with season. I was there in Feb for two successive years(last and the previous), and the water was cold but not extremely chilling, fairly clear and nice.
