For first timers, another vote for Rishikesh, Andro...stop fretting and just go
It might be the best of times or the worst of times...but it's the only time you've got!

Advice from an old broad who can keep you laughing with my so-awful-they're funny adventures: Treat it like a bad blind date, and consider it fodder for a good drinking story once you get home.

I am truly appreciative of all the comments and suggestions that you are all offering.
I realize that I should just let it go, but I'm currently just feeling stupid about the whole thing.
So, people are suggesting I go to the south?
Aside from the heat, are the beaches nice this time of year?
If so, where?

In the south, beaches will be largely off limits as the monsoon picks up and makes the seas very rough...And it will be very hot and humid...
Mountains is the place to be at this time of year, and Almora is one of the drier regions but no guarantees but it is closish to the airport, McCleodganj is another place to consider, with a good climate and tourist infrastructure but when monsoon sets in it gets a tad wet I'm told.

I'm now thinking about my next step.
I appreciate all the suggestions I'm being given.
Are there any places where it's actually cold right now?

Himalayas would be relatively cold. Depends on how high up you go.

It's funny. The concept of India tends to attract a kind of magical thinking among visitors, and the reality of India has a way of dispelling that magical thinking. It's actually kind of wonderful. Spiritually, I believe you had the exact experience you were supposed to have at an ashram. You learned that inner peace doesn't come from running away to India; you learned that swamis and holy men don't necessarily have any particular secret to being happy or even kind. And I hope you learned to be grateful for the kind of peace you can find in your life at home--most people in the world don't have the freedom to escape insects while they're sleeping. I also hope you keep looking for the other lessons India has to teach you, because someday you'll look back at this and laugh.

Now, dont think of Goa and Mumbai. Mumbai is wet with heavy rains today. Traffic is severely affected which makes life difficult here.
Goa: this is off season along with rains. Taxi mafia in the absence of Tourists are hungry for money. So, better for you, being a first times, remain away from Goa.

You can think of Shimla, East India where temperatures are low and not much rains.

This is interesting... Are you suggesting that they offer better deals during 'tourist' season??? I thought it is otherwise (most of the off-season rates should kick in when tourists are out).
