There isn't one at Allahabad in 2009! There was a half ardh Mela there in 2007.
The next Kumbh is in Haridwar in 2010. KK

thats strange...

Thats really strange this travel agent (below) in Delhi is selling me this travel & accomadtion package, saying that theres a mela on mid jan for a month

Namaste and Greetings from Shubh Yatra Pvt. Ltd. (A Division of Glimpses of India Tours) !!

As i informed you the Kumbh Mela is held in each city 3 year rotation, repeating every 12 years. As you can see there is a small Magh Mela every year in Allahabad during the month of Magh (mid January - mid February).

The important bathing dates are :
26 Jan 2009 - Mauni Amavasya
30 Jan 2009 - Vasant Panchami

These day is considered highly auspicious by the Hindu devotees and thousands of people converge at Sangam in Allahabad to take a dip in the holy waters, therefore
we recommand you to stay in Allahabad from 25 Jan to 30 Jan 2009.

Kindly note, we are providing tented accommodation in Ardh Kumbh & Maha Kumbh time, during Magh mela we suggest our guest to stay at hotel.

Hotel Kanha Shyam is best hotel in Allahabad and i.e. close to mela area and it will take only 15-20mins from hotel to Mela area.
Kanha Shyam : US$ 105 per room per night inclusive of breakfast & taxes

any thoughts...

I suppose there may be a smaller mela yes. That is not the Kumbh Mela though, hence the confusion.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kumbh_Mela

http://kumbh-mela.pilgrimage-india.c...umbh-mela.html : "Magh Mela is held annually, other than the years of Kumbh and Ardh Kumbh and is rightfully called the annual mini Kumbh Mela. The auspicious Magh Mela is so called as it falls in the Magh period (Jan-Feb)." Etc. (Reeks of a way to get more pilgrims and visitors in to me, btw, but whatever.)

Certainly check also http://www.kumbhamela.net/ (ah, already pointed to by Kullu, of course).

nb Can a mod if they see this move this to somewhere else than Goa forum please? I guess either Religion or Uttar Pradesh would fit the bill.

Yes, but, going by the email you'd enclosed, he didn't say it's the Kumbh Mela this year. And "small" is a relative term --- the Magh Mela is also quite a major affair, and certainly more than several thousands attend it on the main bathing days.

Not unless one is looking for reek, and that too a very old one :-) AFAIK, the Magh Mela tradition goes back several centuries.

in january Magh Mela is held every year. This is smaller only to Mahakumbha Mela otherwise it is quite large and spectacular. One can see happy and sorry sights what can be seen in Kumbha mela but in muchsmaller scale. Still it is quite fascinating.

Yes you're right, still for one not having seen Maha Kumbh then it's a good intro, 'specially if you join in splashing about in Ganga Ma, however I doubt accommodation is available on site as at the Maha, like in recent editions. Then again you will find accomodation not far away, try some ashrams even, or go for the day from Varanasi.
