Accommodation in Varanasi

Where is the best place to stay in Varanasi for two days at the end of the year? I would love to stay at Ganga View or Palace on the Ganges, but they are both booked out. I'm not sure about Rashmi - has anyone stayed there? Any ideas?

I've stayed at Rashmi, and loved it!It's right on the river. Friendly staff, good food, and of course, a fantastic view.Best rooms are right below the restaurant, facing the river.

Temple on the Ganges at Assi Ghat is also a nice place....

Varanasi is where I was born and grew up, and while I'm studying in Chennai these days, I do visit whenever possible. I'll be in Varanasi 17th to 25th December, and am hosting a French friend, but will be booking a place for two German friends who are visiting 18th-23rd. If you're coming in at a similar or later time, I could check with the same place. Since they'll have stayed there, it would be a pretty foolproof way of knowing the place is worth it.

Yes, that sounds nice. 19th will be busy, with a friend leaving and others having just arrived, but might still work. Otherwise 20th. Let's play it by ear. I'll PM you my email. And if you're good with mythology, reading Roberto Calasso's 'The Marriage of Cadmus and Harmony' has left me with a bunch of questions!
