Valley of Flowers

Seriously thinking of a trip to valley of flowers from 30th Sept onwards.
1. Is it advisable to visit the valley in this season? How cold will it be at Joshimath and the valley (any advice for clothings)

2. I have a two year old kid with me. Is it advisable to go with a kid of this age, (off course we will hire mules for kid and mom for the trek route)or am I being misadventurous?

3. I do not want to do the trip from Rishikesh and Joshimath in one go.Please suggest any scenic overnight stop in between Rishikesh and Joshimath.

Desperately seeking your advice.

Cosmo.

The only thing I can say is that I have an old Trekking in the Indian Himalaya book from lonely planet, and they say that september and october is the best time for the Valley of Flowers.

www.gmvnl.com/newgmvn is a good government site on that area. they have info on that trek also. Happy Trails!

So, eventually, did you travel to the VOF? The best time to visit is between the 15th of June to the end of July. Anytime after that, it is pointless as you may not see that many flowers. So, did you go at all? How was the trip, if you did???

The best thing is to go and see it yourself. I was there on the 10th of July'04 and saw the array of flowers that our school children, who went there in the mid of August, didn't get to see... I guess, you just have to go and see whenever you decide. And by the end of August, you may find just a few species flowering!

The peak flowering season in VOF is generally mid-July to end-Aug. If you are interested in flowers, I don't think it is worth to trek VOF in Sept. However, from the trekking point of view, Sept is generally a good month to trek in Garhwal himalaya as monsoon is on the wane and one can get clear sky most of the time. In VOF, the pilgrims traffic will be relatively less in Sept.

I know at least two IMeres are on way to VOF trek. Let us see what they report back. It appears that it has not been raining much in these areas. If it is so, the flowering season may get delayed and the chances of seeing some flowers during the first half of Sept may be bright this year.
