Yes GMOU and KMOU are more popular and more in number as compared to Govt. buses.
Unfortunately my transit point has always been Hardwar or Rishikesh, even when I had gone to Kumayun. However I will say that Almora is a very big place and its better to go there and ask. I for sure know that buses ply on the routes you have mentioned from Almora.
Regarding share jeeps etc they don't move till it's full (over crowed), the rates vary accoring to the distance and the route.

I agree that the major bus stands are the best places to check for bus schedules.

Till date Haridwar district admin website is the only one that lists bus schedules ex Haridwar. However please note the caveats at the bottom of the pages.

UTC schedule
GMOU schedule

Smile Uttrankhand time table

From delhi one can always board a deluxe bus (a/c)last bus from delhi is 10.30 pm, fare is 285/ for a/c deluxe which reaches dehradun at 5 am. ebing summer and its all ujala so one cna alwyas pick a taxi to go to musoorie....From delhi same applies for rishikesh and haridwar. Bus starts from ISBT(maharan pratap) your own kashmiri gate wala bas adda. Be at bus stop an hour earlier bcoz being summer there is always rush.
places to visist in Dehraudn are robert's cave (called-gucchupani-which has chilled water and lush gren vegetaion around it) + shehestradhara and chakrata road, dakpathar(40 kms from ddun. Mussoorie from ddun is 45 minutes run by a bus or a taxi. Rishikesh or haridwar from dehraudn is almost an hour run by bus or taxi.Hope this helps to all

Buses in Uttarakhand

Hi everyone,

I am will be arriving in Uttarakhand from Amritsar (early November), hopefully arriving at Rishikesh by train (although I haven't checked this out yet).

I am presuming that pretty much all travel in the region is via bus so what I really want to know is details concerning journey times & the frequency of buses before I leave so I can plan my trip properly.

For example one journey I want to make would be from Rishikesh to Joshimath, how long would this take, (I'm presuming more than one bus!) how frequent are the buses etc.

Another journey would be from Gopeshwar to the Nepalise border crossing at Banbaasa. Again anyone got any ideas on this/made the same kind of journey?

I'm not after detail, just a feel of how long journeys are going to take me!

Thanks

Hello again,

I apologise if the question was too vague, no-one seems to have answered me. I had looked elsewhere on the site and managed to glean some information but nothing specifically on the journeys I was managing to take. I'm sure everyone here has travelled more extensively in the region than me, although I have been to India before, and I thought people would be more helpful?

Hi Mavs,

I've changed your thread title to something more specific to your query; hopefully it will attract the right people to your thread. Welcome to IM.

Mavs, if you want to go to Rishikesh, there is quite literally only one train. But you'll have to go to Jalandhar Cantt. to catch it, it's the 4610 Hemkunt Express. Good thing though is it's overnight.
There are more trains from Amritsar to Haridwar, the usual rail-head for that part of the land. The 2054 Janshatabdi is a good and fast day-train, runs daily except Thursdays. There's also the 4632 Dehradun Express overnighter.

Buses and share-jeeps leave from both Haridwar (GMOU stand, near RS) and Rishikesh (Natraj Chauk) for the hills including Joshimath.
It is however a long, hard haul for one day - 275 km from HW, 250 km from Rksh. These vehicles leave early morning, so then you have to take one of the night-trains. Alternatively with the day-train you can travel same day to Rudraprayag, an ideal place to break up the journey into comfortable parts.

Buses for Banbasa usually pass thru Haridwar or Haldwani. Otherwise you wud have to go hopping - in any case you'll probably have to go to Almora or Nainital for that purpose.
