Firstly, this is by far the most informative site I have visited in the last few days of my quest about Binsar. Thanks for all the information.
I am travelling from Kolkata to Delhi on 4th July and from delhi to katgodam on 5th from delhi to katgodam.Travelling with my wife and daugther [ 3years ]. Hill journey is not a problem. My quesries are 1. Should i take the ranikhet express or should I hire a car and go to binsar. 2. Should i travel from katgodam to binsar directly or should I halt in between or can i see Jageswar and go to Binsar. [ how much time will it take ] 3. I have already read that the place to be at Binsar is at KMVN TRH. I am planning to be there for 1 day and night. Is it really true that there is no electricity there ? 4. What will be the temperature there as I am travelling with my kid specific information would be highly appreciated. 5. Will it be cloudy throughout. Fruther I am travelling to Coorg in June next year any information related to that will also be helpful. |

1. I would take the Ranikhet express and hire a car at Haldwani if I wanted to roam around near Binsar. Maybe for a couple of days, to visit Jageshwar or others (Ranikhet? Kausani? Almora, though the town is not a great attraction)
2.Suggest Haldwani (just before Kathgodam)/ Mukhteshwar/Binsar instead, and Jageshwar on a subsequent day. You should be at Binsar by lunch or early afternoon. (straight drive Haldwani/Binsar should be about 4/5 hours) 3. Yes, it is. There is supposed to be a generator for part of the evening there now, as per other member reports. If noisy, I would prefer no electricity. 4.Can't give specifics, but take warm clothes for the child. Evenings can get cold. 5. Not if you are lucky. Its not really monsoon season yet. Do browse the Uttarakhand forum (and also the Karnataka one for Coorg, a lot of info on that, too) |

Mukhteshwar to Binsar should be 3 hours or so.
Can't help with costs for seven days, sorry. Last time (6 months ago?) I hired an indica Haldwani/3 km beyond Almora I paid 600, one way. I would think around 1500 a day would be a decent deal (and no other costs), for driving upto 200 km. Not that you will be doing anything like that in the hills, of course. But maybe others have better/more recent figures. Fuel costs have risen. Haldwani is actually easier to get transport from.. from Kathgodam you have to walk out of the bigger station and hit the main road... not far, but Haldwani cabs are right outside. And they know the Ranikhet express timings better than me, so they are always there. ![]() |

Thanks captain sir. I have gone through your reply to MAS [ alibag ] about his itenary. With reference to that I have chalked my own itenary please chk and give your susgestions.
Day 1 : haldwani - 75kms - mukteshwar -92kms - binsar Day 2 : Binsar Day 3 : To jageswar and back - 67kms one way Day 4 : Binsar Day 5 : After breakfast to bageshwar [ 2 hours ]- Chaukori - 112kms [ around 6 hours ] Day 6 : Chaukori - patal Bhuvaneshwar - Chaukori - 29kms Day 7 : After Breakfast to Munshiyari - 98kms - [ 7hours ] Day 8 : Munshiyari Day 9 : Muniyari to ranikhet [ via bageswar / baijnath / kausani ]- 262 kms Day 10: Ranikhet Day 11: Ranikhet to Kathgodam via the four "tals" Queries :- 1. Are KMVN chaukori and Munsiyari offer the same kind of views as KMVN Binsar - if not what other option. 2. The return from Munsyiari to Ranikhet seems hectic please suggest an aletrnate route. 3. Are the car drivers halpful and adjusting. Like do they take you to the correct places and show you the things properly. What i mean to say is like I read somewhere that enroute chaukori to munsiyari just before the village of nachani there is a dirt track which leads of the main road and down to the river. If i tell them will they take me there. Or else may be I would like to stop somewhere rest and move. I hope you understand what I am asking. 4. What is there to see at ranikhet or kausani. 5. How about returning from pittogarh and Mount abbot. 6. Please remember I am travelling in July 1sy week. I am yet to book my return tickets. |

-Jageshwar is about 40km by road from Binsar, one way, I think.
You don't have to go through Almora. -Do consider knocking off day 4 at Binsar and using that time in Chaukori or Munsiyari. If you can be flexible you can decide after reaching Binsar. If the weather and the views are good you could stay on at Binsar. Rest looks good, except the usual problem all of us in trying to return via Ranikhet, which makes it a longish drive from Munsiyari. Actually it would be longish whichever way you come back, because you want to stay at bigger places with family around. Others -KMVN Chaukori (a favourite if the weather is good) is as good, or even better than Binsar. I prefer this to Muniyari, which is good enough. -There are other staying options in this area, but for the views, KMVN has the best locations. I visited Wayfarers retreat once, (vijaypur) with a plan to stay ther, but preferred KMVN -Browse the Uttaranchal forum, others have posted about some other hotels/resorts - I usually drive myself. The few times I have hired a cab, they have been accomodating enough. They will push for more money en route for diversions (fair), and if things are clear at the outset they are fine. The only time I have a problem with them is when (and this is with all of them) they want to coast downhill with the engine off. This is unacceptable and I make it clear beforehand. I have never hired a car long term beyond Bageshwar, btw, so don't know much about them there. - Kausani has more views- uninterrupted length of the Himalaya (300km? cant remember) The views at Chaukori are more encompassing, though, all around you. Kausani used to be a better, quieter place. To see- there are some ashrams and the like, which I have never seriously visited. Staying options are aplenty, try to get a room with a view if you stay there. -Return trip can be shortened if you plan and start from Chaukori. Other alternative is to stop overnight at Kausani instead of Ranikhet, slightly shorter. -Pithoragarh/Mount Abbot is possible, but another direction. You will have to decide one, and how you want to return, in that case, Tanakpur or Haldwani. (PS, would prefer knock off the sir, because a) not been knighted and b) makes me feel old ) |

I have gone through almost all the threads of Uttaranchal forum and there is none without a reply from you.Capt. there are a few other queries - [this is the first time I am travelling alone with my family and my first time to Uttaranchal just want to make sure everything is arranged for :- 1. I was also considering about Day 4 and finally deceide there. 2. I plan to take pittogarh / aboot mount route. Please help me with Tanakpur to kolkata route as I am unable to find any trains for tanakpur to delhi or kolkata. |

I know buses run regularly Tanakpur Delhi
some timings are here.. From http://dtc.nic.in/dt4a.htm#2 there must be others too; maybe you can call them up Trains... dunno. I have a feeling buses will be faster, but not sure at all. --searching-- Also read steven_ber's post 9 in this thread, which seems to indicate that tanakpur is poorly connected by train Went Tanakpur forest area |

am back from my binsar trip - had a great time there. Although could only see the himalaya on only three occassion in my entire trip of 7 days but the entire experience was still excellent.
I have been to a few hilly areas but nothing compares to the Kumoan region the feel, smeel and crispness of the air is very terific. Covered Binsar, bageswar, kausani, choukori, patel bhuneswar and nainital. If there is one unique thing at Kumoan I will definately suggest patel bhuvaneswar - one experience which you will never have at any other place. Mountain Views and others could change from place to place and will be good or bad from different prespectives but Patal Bhuvaneshwar is in a league of its own. Truly, it was an experience of lifetime. Thanks once again captain in particular and all other IMers in general for there invaluable support and information for making my trip a success. Thanks once again. P.S. Planning to make a trip in december Tanakpur - Pittorgarh - Munsiyari and back. would require some feedback. |
