Me advise a local lad? FAT chance! AB's seen more of the state already than I have.

The Niti valley is beautiful though.
my hard luck. i was in North India for almost all of my student life. then, when i started earning, i was stuck in places soooo far, that if i tell someone that I am from uttarakhand, he would say "I do not know where this place is on the map".

for some southies, everything beyond karnataka and andhra is north india. and back in munsyari, when i told one of my guides that i was workign in chennai currently, he remarked that it must be close to mumbai ...

we are living in a big and diverse country indeed.

There is a Seraghat (or Sheraghat) when you climb down from Dhaulchinna towards the bottom of the valley, on the way to Berinag/Chaukori.

Then there is a Seraghat a little ahead of Madkot on the Munsyari Jauljibi route, next to the Gori Ganga river.
Shyamal already mentioned them in #342.

I passed thru the first last year on way from Munsyari to Almora.
Wud have liked to drive Madkot-Jauljibi, but there wasn't time. Went back to Munsyari after lunch in Madkot.
Oh well, some other time. Still have to see a lot of Pithoragarh - Askot, Dharchula, Tawaghat, Rameshwar, Lohaghat, Jhulaghat....And all of Champawat.

There are northies who think similar about the South. In fact a friend of mine from school days wud say "I consider everything after Jaipur to be South India"! But his geography was especially bad, and he wasn't ashamed of it either.

The condition, indeed is there, as both DW, and almoraboy point out. And more so, for north eastern states. Most of the indians wont even know the names of north east states.
When I had been to Leh, one of my friends, inadvertently asked the driver, that 'aap tibetan log kya..... ?' (I dont remember the question). The driver sort of got angry, and said, 'Hum tibeti dikhte hain, par Bhartiya hain' It is so true.

Addendum to Dilliwala's list:

2 Ramni - one on Ghat-Kuari Pass trek route and the other on way to Nandadevi National Park.
2 Garampani - one near Khairna Bridge and the other between Gangori and Maneri.
2 Dunagiri - one near Dwarahat and other on Lata Kharak-Malari trek route.

I've actually been preparing a list (in my head) to pen down one day of exactly what you're saying, Shyamal. Mine includes HP too (i.e. one name in UA the other in HP), and "male/female", i.e. last letter 'a' and 'i'
It's not ready by a far stretch, but here's a few selections:

3 Saurs - seen 2, third is off-road but it's PO is on-road
2 Dugaddas - seen both
2 Pokhris, 1 Pokhra - seen 1 Pokhri, bypassed Pokhra
3 Sankris - seen all
2 Kandikhals - seen both
2 Kandakhals - seen 1
2 Hindolakhals - seen both
1 Barethi, 1 Bareth - seen both
2 Hanumanchattis - seen both
2 Phulchattis - seen both
2 Garurchattis - seen both
2 Bhatwaris - seen 1
3 Kandas - seen 2
3 Barkots - seen 2
2 Dharkots - seen both
2 Darkots - seen 1
3 Shrikots - seen all
2 Paukhals - seen 1
3 Ramgarhs - seen all (hmm, does Malla/Talla count? )
2 Ghats - seen neither
2 Nagnis - seen both
2 Mundolis - seen 1
2 Arakots - seen both
1 Tiuni, 1 Tiuna - seen first
1 Mori, 1 Mora - seen both
2 Thauldhars - seen 1, passed close to other (it's off-road)
2 Shyampurs - seen both
2 Laldhangs - seen 1
2 Vasuki Tals - seen neither
2 Ramganga rivers - seen both
2 Dhauliganga rivers - seen 1
2 Pali Gads - seen both
1 Binsar, 1 Binsar Mahadev, 1 Binsar Devta! - seen first, passed close to second
1 Dhauntiyal, 1 Dhauntiyal Devta - seen first
2 Tapovans - seen 1
2 Kotis - seen both
2 Chambas - seen the UA one, HP one overdue
2 Baijnaths, seen the UA one, HP one overdue
2 Kamands - one in UA (soft d though), one in HP (hard d)
2 Ganais - one in UA ('n' as in Ganesh), one in HP
2 Kharapatthars - seen UA one, HP one overdue
2 Rampurs - one in UA, one in HP, but who knows how mnay more there might be!

In HP
Jadla and Jadli - seen both
Sungra and Sungri - seen first
2 Kotis - seen 1
2 Sainjs - seen 1

This list is by no stretch of the imagination conclusive. In fact more intensive searches will bring up many more numbers of some of the names above, tiny villages tucked away where no roads and no tourists go. E.g. the names Kanda and Koti are used indiscriminately across the hills. And who knows how many of the generic Do Sarkas and Kainchi Mors exist.

And this list doesn't even include names which are very similar - Thaldeval, Devalthal and Devalgarh, Deval (De-vaal), Maletha and Malethi (different 'th' sounds), various combos of Garur, Chaubatiya and Chaubatiyakhal (not to be confused with Chirbatiyakhal ), Gangani and Gangnani, Taluka and Takula, various combos of Pipal (-dali, -pani, -koti).......the list is practically endless.
In fact I was also thinking of the same thing, actually I got confused by Sheraghat..I thought there is only one Sheraghat...

Excellent work Dilliwala......

Good catch, Sadaji. I shud have caught the NDNP one, I was browsing thru the book 'Spies in the Himalayas' just last week . Do you know if both theses place have the same Devnagari spelling? I've seen Ramani sometimes, not sure which 'a' is pronounced which way, nor the 'n'.

"2 Garampani - one near Khairna Bridge and the other between Gangori and Maneri."
The second one I know and have passed thru on two occasions, but I have doubts about it, even though the name appears on some maps. The village around is actually called Ganeshpuri and is sign-posted as such. The name Garampani I've seen associated only with the Shikhar Camp.

"2 Dunagiri - one near Dwarahat and other on Lata Kharak-Malari trek route."
Yes, I saw the Dwarahat one on the map. Left it out becos I didn't know whether this was a village, or the temple's name (as per N&W), or both. Have you been there? Is the village also called Dunagiri, and does the temple have a longer name, like Devi/Devta? The N&W map also says '364 steps' in brackets.

Actually I'm confused too. N&W map shows both as Sheraghat. But when I passed thru the one on the Pithoragarh/Almora border last year, I saw the Devnagari signs clearly said Seraghat. Means I'll have to take another trip to the Madkot one (hey, any excuse to go into the hills will do ). Unless AB has some photos.

I have not been to Dwarahat and Dunagiri. If time permits, I am planning to visit these places from Ranikhet this month.
Dunagiri is about 15 kms from Dwarahat. From the road, one will have to trek 1 km (by steps as you correctly said)to reach the Dunagiri where Vaishno Devi temple is located. My interest for visiting Dunagiri lies in that one can have a different perspective of Trishul on a clear day.

I have been to Dunagiri once..From Dwarhat ,Dunagiri temple is visible by naked eyes..It is said that when Hanuman was returning from Himalayas(after Laxman got injured by the Shakti of Meghnad(Indrajeet)) a small portion of the hill fell at this place.
